Winning goal will do fit-again Oliver Arblaster the world of good

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was thrilled for match-winner Oliver Arblaster whose sweet early strike secured a 1-0 win against Bristol City in a frenetic Championship clash at Ashton Gate.

The midfielder has faced a long battle to regain full form and fitness after an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2024, so his sweetly struck fifth-minute volley from just outside the box was considered extra special by his boss.

United went on to claim three deserved points with a rock-solid display than inflicted City’s second home defeat in the space of four days.

A delighted Wilder said: “That goal will do Oli’s confidence the world of good. When you suffer a serious knee injury and spend over a year out, the first thing you tick off is a return to training.

“Then comes a return to playing and after that a return to top form. It has been an up and down struggle for Oli to reach that stage.

“Today, he and Kalvin Phillips were brilliant in midfield. We all know how highly Oli was rated among young midfielders before the injury and what he is capable of achieving.

“We have had a lot chucked at us recently with the timing of the goals we have conceded and the quality of them, but today our game management was spot on.

“I was particularly pleased with our first-half performance. But we expected a reaction from Bristol City in the second half and dealt with a lot of balls into our box very strongly.

“The group is high on team spirit. I’m delighted to get a clean sheet and a solid away victory from a typical Championship game, which ebbed and flowed.”

A minute before Arblaster’s goal, Yu Hirakawa squandered City’s best chance, miscuing his shot straight at goalkeeper Michael Cooper when through.

Bristol City boss Michael Skubala said: “We weren’t good enough today. We got bullied a bit.

“But we also had the best scoring opportunity of the game before they scored and had we taken it we would have seen a totally different game.

“When you are through on goal, you have to score. That’s a problem for us at the moment. If you don’t take your big chances and fail to keep clean sheets you are not going to win games.

“If you score early at home the opposition have to come out and play differently. But today they were too physical for us having gone in front.

“Today we started too slowly, lost too many duels and our clearances were not strong enough. We have a lot of work to do and it’s good to have a free midweek coming up.”
