Ninety players from clubs across the archipelago have gathered in San Juan de la Rambla for the Absolute Badminton Championship of the Canary Islands.
The Tenerife municipality of San Juan de la Rambla serves as the epicenter of Canarian badminton this weekend. CD Bádminton Caparina organized the regional championship with support from the Canarian Badminton Federation. Action opened early Saturday morning inside the Pabellón Municipal San Juan de la Rambla, with Elliot Xosé Domínguez serving as the referee for the event.
The tournament brings together representatives from every club across the island chain. With 90 competitors entered, the draw spans three separate classifications: Absoluta A, Absoluta B, and Absoluta C.
Competition in the premier Absoluta A division carries direct consequences for the national rankings. In the men’s and women’s singles draws, Sergio Alonso of CB Tenerife and Zayra Aguiar of CB Los Hinojeros Granadilla hold the number-one seed positions.
Behind Alonso in the men’s bracket, Samuel Tarife of Auria Bádminton Club and Kevin Van of Tenzul El Rosario occupy the second and third seed lines, respectively. In the women’s singles, Aitana Martínez of CB Tenerife claims the number-two seeding behind Aguiar, setting up potential high-stakes elimination matches as the tournament progresses through Saturday.
While the top tier draws the spotlight for its ranking implications, the championship also runs dedicated draws for the Absoluta B and Absoluta C divisions. These secondary and tertiary brackets operate outside the national ranking system but offer essential competitive minutes for the wider regional roster.
Lot Socas of CB Los Hinojeros Granadilla and Winnie Buschmann of CD Caparina lead the seedings in the Absoluta B tournament. Meanwhile, Carlos Sánchez of CD Caparina holds the top seed in the Absoluta C division, highlighting the depth of talent within the host club.
The logistical backing for the regional championship extends well beyond the organizing club. The Canarian Badminton Federation collaborated directly with CD Bádminton Caparina to deliver the event.
Public and private entities also funded and supported the competition, including the Ayuntamiento de San Juan de la Rambla, the Dirección General de Deportes del Gobierno de Canarias, the Cabildo de Tenerife, and equipment supplier RSL.
