Greg LeMond celebrates 40 years of Tour de France history in France

Forty years after his historic emergence on the European cycling scene, three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond is heading to Pipriac in the Ille-et-Vilaine department for the “Critérium des champions d’hier” on Saturday, October 17, 2026, rfi.fr reported. The American trailblazer will inaugurate a cycling circuit named in his honor and celebrate the 40th anniversary of his initial triumph in cycling’s premier grand tour.

Pipriac Honors a Transatlantic Pioneer

LeMond stands as the first American to win the Tour de France, navigating an era when the European peloton remained strictly bound by traditional methods. Hailing from Lakewood, California, LeMond arrived on the Old Continent with an unapologetic American identity, introducing triathlon handlebars for time trials, aerodynamic cycling eyewear, and a commercial savvy that rattled conservative team structures. Rfi.fr reported that LeMond shaped his entire professional calendar around just two marquee targets: the Tour de France and the World Championships. That singular focus on a summer peak later became the blueprint for dominant champions like Miguel Indurain, Jan Ullrich, and Lance Armstrong.

From Junior Ski Cross-Training to World Champion

Originally drawn to cycling to build leg strength during the ski off-season, LeMond announced his prodigious talent by capturing the junior world title in 1979. Two years onward, the Renault team handed the teenager his first professional contract. At age 23, LeMond claimed his breakthrough stage-racing victory at the 1983 Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré before securing the rainbow jersey at the World Championships in Altenrhein, Switzerland, defeating Dutch rider Adrie van der Poel and Ireland’s Stephen Roche.

When LeMond made his Tour de France debut in 1984 alongside team leader Laurent Fignon, he finished third overall in Paris, collected the young rider classification, and became the first American to stand on the podium of the Grande Boucle.

The Intra-Team Duel on the Alpe d’Huez

In 1985, business tycoon Bernard Tapie lured the Californian to La Vie Claire with a lucrative contract, pairing him with five-time Tour winner Bernard Hinault. The cohabitation exploded during the 1986 Tour de France, producing a fierce internal struggle between the established French champion and his ambitious younger teammate. Hinault entered the race as the 32-year-old pillar of the peloton, while a 25-year-old LeMond chased his maiden yellow jersey. At the summit of Alpe d’Huez, the two rivals crossed the line hand in hand, signaling a symbolic shift in leadership. That same summer, LeMond became the first American to win the Tour aboard a carbon-fiber frame.

Tragedy, Record-Breaking Return, and Final Crown

A severe hunting accident in the spring of 1987 sidelined LeMond for an extended period, casting doubt on his career. Yet his comeback with the Belgian squad ADR in 1989 delivered one of sport’s most memorable chapters. LeMond overhauled Laurent Fignon during the final-stage time trial from Versailles to the Champs-Élysées, snatching the yellow jersey by an eight-second margin—the closest winning gap in Tour de France history. Later that season, LeMond secured his second world title in Chambéry, followed by a third Tour de France victory in 1990. Persistent injuries stemming from his hunting accident eventually slowed his output, leading to his retirement in 1994 after consecutive mid-race abandonments.

Cycling Legends Gather in Brittany

When LeMond arrives in Pipriac to inaugurate his namesake circuit, a cohort of celebrated cycling figures will gather alongside him to mark the milestone. Rfi.fr reported that former champions scheduled to attend include Bernard Hinault, Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle, Bernard Thévenet, Joop Zoetemelk, and Claudio Chiappucci, bringing together generations of cycling royalty in the Ille-et-Vilaine countryside.
