Chelsea's Jordan Henderson 'forgets what team he plays for' on Liverpool return

Former Liverpool star Jordan Henderson had an interesting moment where he appeared to appeal for a decision in his old side's favor, during his return to Anfield with Chelsea

Wednesday night wasn't quite the return to Anfield that Jordan Henderson would've envisaged when he saw his new team, Chelsea, get drawn out against his old club, Liverpool, in the EFL Cup fourth round.

While the midfielder was greeted with cheers and warm applause in his first appearance back on Merseyside last season for Brentford, he had become something of a pantomime villain in his latest, with his switch to west London seemingly the main driver for the boos and jeers from the crowd.

It was an interesting environment for Henderson to be in, considering his record during his time at Liverpool. The 36-year-old spent 12 years with the Reds, captained the club to its first Premier League title, while also winning the Champions League, EFL Cup, and FA Cup in his time there.

There was almost an acknowledgment of that with his time at Brentford, but the move to a more direct rival in Chelsea, and perhaps his recent celebrations with the club, seemed to cause some unrest.

Perhaps given all of those factors, Henderson wouldn't have expected such a hostile reception, and what he also wouldn't have expected was a defeat on the night.

A tale of penalties saw Chelsea take the lead from the spot, after Ryan Gravenberch felled Moises Caicedo from behind in the box, allowing Morgan Rogers to score in a game of few chances.

Just moments later, Liverpool was handed the chance to respond, as a cross in the box appeared to hit the hand of Wesley Fofana, causing multiple players to stand up and appeal to the referee, Darren England.

Bizarrely, among them to seemingly appeal was Henderson, who may have thought it was a hand from one of the Reds, or perhaps he had forgotten what team he was on.

Either way, it was an amusing moment, as the appeals appeared to sway the referee to give the spot-kick, as Cody Gakpo stepped up and dispatched his effort to draw level.

Henderson ended up playing the full 90 minutes, as neither team could find the one opportunity to separate them, resulting in a penalty shootout to decide who would reach the quarter-finals.

There were notable misses from Kostas Tsimikas and Gravenberch, but fortunately for Andoni Iraola's side, there were more to come from the visitors, as Valentin Barco, Emmanuel Emegha, and Wesley Fofana all failed to score their chances.

That has knocked Chelsea and Henderson out of contention for one of their available trophies, with limited opportunities now left to win silverware due to a lack of European competition for the West London outfit.

As for Iraola and Liverpool, the chance is still there to land a trophy at the first time of asking, with a clash against the manager's old side, Bournemouth, set for the final eight.
