AN OLYMPIC gold medalist has provided an update on her new life after buying a ‘one-way ticket to Dubai’ and changing her name.
Australian swimming champion Stephanie Rice has taken her fans on a wild rollercoaster since the days of her Olympic success.
Rice, 38, retired from swimming in 2014 and has significantly struggled with mental health issues after her whole life perspective changed.
The three-time Olympic gold medallist, who won them all at the Beijing 2008 Games, took a big step when she went on Channel 7’s SAS Australia in 2023.
She stated midway through when the going got tough that she ‘needed to finish’ the SAS course for her own good.
It wasn’t long after that series was broadcast, however, that Rice bought a ‘one-way ticket to Dubai’ and blew her life up completely.
The former Olympian, who now takes the name Lassey following her marriage to Mark Lassey, has since made religion a focal point of her life.
She has set up a new Instagram account under her married name that promotes her business consulting services.
These services specifically focus on three things that are written in her header, “Faith, Finances, Stewardship.”
“For the woman who knows she’s capable of more and is sick of starting over,” her new account’s biography reads.
“I’m rebuilding at 38, but this time, with Jesus at the centre of it all 💛.”
Her new account opened with a post about her highs and lows of her life so far, with the first slide captioned, “I’ve won Olympic gold. Made millions of dollars. Lost almost everything. Found Jesus.
“And now, at 38, I’m rebuilding my career all over again.”
The three-time Olympic gold medalist and Lassey, a pastor, have made a life for themselves out in Dubai.
They got married in January 2025 in Perth, and now Lassey spends his time preaching between the two nations.
Her first post on the account, made three days ago, had the following caption, “Feels like the perfect time to start a fresh account, in my new name, and with a new commitment to sharing the journey God is taking me on.
“I pray that my story would give you hope that God has the power to turn lives around, to restore what’s been broken and bless you above what you’ve asked thought or even imagined.
“I would really appreciate you following this [my] new account as I’m beginning to transition across to this account over the next few weeks.
“Probably part crazy to be walking away from 140,000 people, but honestly I’d rather start again knowing the people joining now want to be apart of the story Gods writing, not the one that’s already been written, even if that’s just a small amount.
“I love you all, thank you for your support. May God bless you abundantly.”
Who knows what comes next in the wild life of Stephanie Lassey, formerly the Olympian who went by the name of Rice.
