Fenerbahçe forward Marco Asensio will undergo knee surgery in Spain next week after medical scans revealed a cartilage lesion, club officials confirmed following days of intense media speculation regarding the player’s physical condition and his relationship with the technical staff.

Surgery Planned in Spain Following Cartilage Finding

Fenerbahçe team doctor Ahmet Kulduk stated that after managing a persistent swelling and pain process through rehabilitation, medical staff ordered a magnetic resonance imaging scan. The scan identified a lesion on the back of the player’s patella that requires surgical intervention. Club officials consulted with specialists in Turkey, including Prof. Dr. Ömer Taşer, as well as Asensio’s longtime doctor in Spain who performed his previous operation. All consulted specialists agreed on the surgical recommendation, and the player consented to the procedure. The operation will take place in Spain with Dr. Kulduk in attendance, while the exact duration of Asensio’s absence from the pitch will be determined after the operation is completed. Team doctor Ahmet Kulduk noted that prior to this, no surgical indication had been determined by anyone at the club.

Oğuz Çetin Addresses Team Chemistry and Roster Rumors

Çetin emphasized that the club operates under strict presidential instructions to avoid internal discord, referencing past institutional friction, noting the president’s instruction regarding not wanting another Alex incident executed with great sensitivity. He outlined the player’s recent athletic timeline, noting that Asensio sustained an upper thigh strain during the Konyaspor match before playing 83 minutes in a friendly against Turan Tovuz during the international break in Azerbaijan to regain match rhythm. After that friendly, a minor knee swelling emerged, which medical staff treated prior to the Süper Lig fixture against Çaykur Rizespor, where Asensio started and scored. Fenerbahçe secured a 3-0 victory against Corendon Alanyaspor in their most recent league outing, a match Asensio watched from the stands alongside teammate Jayden Oosterwolde after traveling to England for the UEFA Champions League fixture against Aston Villa, where pre-match scans ultimately ruled him out of the squad.

İsmail Kartal Dismisses Speculation After Alanyaspor Victory

Addressing reporters following the win over Alanyaspor, Fenerbahçe head coach İsmail Kartal maintained that his rapport with every member of the squad remains solid. Kartal stated that false reports regarding player disputes circulate frequently, assuring supporters that the club would transparently address Asensio’s situation. The head coach reiterated the team’s dual focus on capturing the Süper Lig title and advancing as far as possible in the Champions League. Following the 3-0 win against Corendon Alanyaspor, head coach İsmail Kartal stated: Benim hiçbir oyuncuyla aramda problem yok. Olmamıştır, olursa gereğini yaparım. Bundan önce yaptığım gibi. Ben Fenerbahçe’nin evladıyım, dışarıdan gelen biri değilim. Her şeyden önce arma. Sürekli çeşitli yalan haberler var. Biz ligde önce şampiyon olmak istiyoruz. Şampiyonlar Ligi’nde de gidebileceğimiz yere kadar gideceğiz.
