Malik Tillman has intensified the selection pressure on Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s starting lineup following a standout performance in the UEFA Europa League, LigaInsider reported. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder scored and delivered a strong overall display during a 4-0 victory against Lech Posen, strengthening his case for regular minutes under head coach Carles Martínez.
Following the 4-0 win against Lech Posen, head coach Carles Martínez acknowledged that Tillman has put himself in contention for more frequent starts. Speaking at a Thursday evening press conference after Leverkusen secured their fourth competitive victory, the Spanish manager noted that the American arrived in good form at the start of the campaign.
“If he plays like he did now, he makes it harder for me to decide who starts.” Martínez added that he welcomes this exact type of competitive pressure from his players, though he maintained that squad choices remain difficult. “Everyone has to perform, but only eleven can play,” Martínez said, emphasizing that Tillman must sustain his level over the coming weeks.
Sporting Managing Director Simon Rolfes addressed Tillman’s slow start in domestic fixtures by pointing to a teammate as a template for overcoming difficult spells. In comments reported by RP Online, Rolfes noted that striker Patrik Schick experienced similar hurdles before establishing himself as the current top scorer in the Bundesliga with five goals.
“Patrik also had difficult phases and now he has developed in a direction where he is top, top, top,” Rolfes said. By contrast, Tillman’s domestic statistics show a single assist recorded during a 2-2 draw against FC Augsburg.
Despite quiet domestic output, Rolfes pointed to Tillman’s international form with the United States national team during the international break, where he scored twice in four matches. Rolfes revealed he held a personal discussion with the player to encourage him. “He did that very well and I told him to take that momentum and self-confidence with him,” Rolfes said. The 44-year-old executive confirmed that Leverkusen holds high expectations for the club’s record signing, who joined from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2025 for a reported transfer fee of 35 million euros.
As Tillman fights for a regular role, external reports have linked the player to a potential departure during the upcoming winter transfer window. According to Fussball Transfers citing coverage from Sky, both the player and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly open to a loan separation if a suitable option arises, with potential interest originating from the Premier League.
Domestically, Tillman’s prospects for playing time could improve due to recent injuries in the Leverkusen attack. Forward Martin Terrier picked up another injury during the match against Lech Posen, while Christian Kofane is also sidelined, leaving options thin for Martínez. During the victory over Posen, Martínez utilized Tillman alongside Ibrahim Maza in a false-nine role.
Under Martínez, Tillman has appeared in six matches across all competitions, totaling 312 minutes on the pitch and one goal involvement. Across his career with the Rhine club, the midfielder has accumulated 48 total appearances, eight goals, and two assists. In his two previous seasons with PSV Eindhoven, Tillman scored 25 times and provided 19 assists across 73 appearances.
Leverkusen enters a demanding fixture schedule with two matches per week leading into the mid-November international break. The immediate test arrives on Sunday, when Bayer Leverkusen hosts SC Freiburg in a Bundesliga fixture at the BayArena.
