Amanal Petros Explains Shoving Delivery Cyclist During Frankfurt Marathon

German marathon record holder Amanal Petros encountered an unexpected obstacle at the 37-kilometer mark of the Frankfurt Marathon when a food delivery rider crossed the barricaded course on an electric bicycle, forcing the elite runner to alter his stride.

The 37-Kilometer Course Obstruction

Roughly one hour and fifty-five minutes into the Frankfurt Marathon, German runner Amanal Petros faced a disrupted path as he led the elite field through a left-hand turn. An individual operating an electric delivery bicycle entered the active, closed race course directly ahead of the European champion, creating a sudden hazard on the route.

Petros finished the race in second place behind Ethiopia’s Jirata Dinki, clocking a time of 2:05:46 amid challenging weather conditions. While the incident went unmentioned in immediate post-race interviews, Petros later addressed the encounter publicly online after viewing video footage of the moment that drew commentary from spectators.

Petros Details the Physical Impact

Writing in comments on social media beneath a video of the course obstruction, Petros explained that he chose to speak out because many observers misunderstood the dynamics of the situation. He noted that athletes contesting a marathon at the 37- and 38-kilometer marks are racing for fractions of seconds and specific placements, particularly when taking tight turns.

“Suddenly someone stood with a bicycle directly in front of me and blocked my way,” Petros wrote, describing how he was forced to brake abruptly with his left foot. That sudden stop caused a brief blockade in his calf and completely disrupted his running rhythm.

Addressing his physical reaction captured on video, where he makes contact with the cyclist, Petros stated that his response stemmed entirely from the heat of the moment. He acknowledged that pushing the individual might not have been his best reaction while clarifying that he had no intention of causing injury or launching a personal attack.

Context of Late-Race Demands

The 2025 world championship silver medalist emphasized the intense mental focus, physical stress, and severe fatigue that accumulate during the final stages of a marathon. He urged critics to understand the extreme physiological load placed on athletes before passing judgment on split-second reactions made under severe race pressure.
