Top teams collide in Division I, Smithfield will attempt to cement the top seed in Division II and Johnston sits two results from an unbeaten regular season in Division III.
That’s the status of the boys soccer races in the state. There is plenty to play for entering this last week of the regular season.
La Salle and Chariho are on a collision course in Division I, with the Rams hosting the unbeaten Chargers in a Friday night meeting at Cimini Stadium. That’s the current 1-4 semifinal matchup at the top level – the 2-3 preview will be played Wednesday night when Barrington welcomes North Kingstown. The top of those standings could be significantly shuffled by the time we reach next Monday.
The Sentinels have nudged ahead of Scituate and could be poised to top the bracket in Division II. Smithfield faces tough trips to Pilgrim and Classical to finish out its schedule – that Thursday date with the Purple is set for 6 p.m. downtown. Mt. Hope, Coventry, Narragansett, Central Falls, Tiverton and Cranston East all follow in those competitive standings.
The Panthers visit Middletown before welcoming a Division II foe in North Providence for the regular season finale Thursday night. Exeter-West Greenwich, Ponaganset and Toll Gate round out the top four in Division III, three teams who all could reach the title weekend at Rhode Island College. The Titans are in position to make a credible bid at a repeat after winning the crown in 2025.
We're wrapping up the second month of the 2026 season but would still offer this reminder – this isn't for anything of real value. It won't determine All-State, the Player of the Year at our annual June show downtown or your college future. We're just here to highlight your accomplishments in a given week and shed a little light on performers throughout all three divisions.
Andrew Bettez was last week’s winner in the Player of the Week poll, dominating with 72.9% of the vote. He collected four goals in wins over Tiverton, St. Raphael and North Providence, results that helped keep the Spartans atop the Division II standings.
Expect to see your name here and didn't find it? Could be a couple reasons for that. First among them – we need to hear about how your games went every night, and we're asking for some help with that. Our staff would love to be everywhere all at once, but it's simply not possible.
Coaches and athletic administrators – home or away – are asked to contact us with their results every time you play. This is recognition for your players and communities, and we’re happy to offer it. We just need some cooperation, and we hope that’s not too difficult.
We can’t take submissions from parents, family or club coaches. We appreciate your passion and interest, but we’d like to keep this as official as possible.
Please send in game results via email at pjsports@providencejournal.com Monday through Friday from 6-10 p.m., or by phone at (401) 277-7340. Thanks in advance to everyone who will be in contact with us throughout the season.
Our next five nominees are here. Voting in the online poll ends Saturday night. Phone calls, emails and social media contact won’t be considered. Logging into this story and participating through the poll below is your only option.
With that, on to the nominees.
Deffley put home the winner as the Rams held off Barrington, 3-2, in a battle of the current top two teams in Division I. La Salle maintained its hold on the No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs thanks to this result.
The Knights remain a threat in Division II thanks to players like Donis. He scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Central Falls, and Central followed with a 0-0 draw against downtown campus rival Classical.
The Skippers played just once last week, but it was a strong performance – a 4-0 shutout of Pawtucket Co-op. Longval helped power his team to three points with a goal and an assist, and North Kingstown remains in line for a favorable seed in the upcoming Division I playoffs.
Torres Luna was on fire last week in wins over Rogers and Ponaganset. He hit for a hat trick in a 6-1 triumph over the Vikings and had a hand in all the scoring – two goals, one assist – in a 3-2 rivalry triumph over the Chieftains.
Monteiro’s offensive contributions came in twos last week. He netted a pair of goals apiece in a 3-1 victory over Bishop Hendricken and a 5-3 triumph over East Greenwich, helping the Townies build some momentum for the upcoming playoffs.
