Manchester United came from behind to earn a point against rivals Manchester City in a ferocious derby.
City took the lead through Bunny Shaw, who was booed by the United fans for large periods of the game after getting into numerous battles with Maya Le Tissier.
It looked as though Shaw’s goal would be the winner but Elisabeth Terland fired in an equaliser in the 89th minute to give United a deserved point.
Fireworks had been let off outside the stadium moments before United’s equaliser. It was perhaps a fitting description of how this game had played out, with players from both teams flying into tackles.
United will be competitive this season if they keep playing like this. They have seemingly abandoned the high-risk football new manager Eva Olid attempted to implement in their first two games, which brought defeats against London City Lionesses and Chelsea. After honest conversations between players and staff, United went back to basics and earned a point against Arsenal in their subsequent fixture. They had won every fixture since before coming into this Manchester derby.
City, meanwhile, had a 100 per cent winning record but were unusually poor. They had created little before Shaw produced a piece of magic to give them the lead. They had chances to kill the game, with Shaw missing from close-range before Grace Clinton had an effort cleared off the line.
United stayed in the game and their hard work was rewarded when Terland reacted to a loose ball to fire home from inside the box.
