Hina Kikuchi retires from table tennis to act

Hina Kikuchi has officially announced her retirement from competitive sports and signed with the entertainment agency “MU”, transitioning to a career as a professional actress, according to recent media reports.

From Gymnastics to Table Tennis and the T League Spotlight

Born in Saitama Prefecture in 2004, Kikuchi initially trained in artistic gymnastics before transitioning to table tennis during her middle school years, a relatively late start in a sport where elite competitors often begin at age three or four. Despite her late entry, her athletic flexibility and competitive drive earned her admission on a sports recommendation to Goshogawara Commercial High School in Aomori Prefecture (later renamed Shimoyama Gakuen), known for its rigorous, closed-dormitory athletic program.

Her trajectory shifted in July 2023 during the opening fixtures of the Japan T League. While serving as a ball retriever on the sidelines, photographs of her focused expression and unstyled appearance circulated widely across Japanese social media platforms, generating millions of views. Rather than pursuing a corporate team career, Kikuchi maintained a structured plan, stating her intention to conclude her competitive table tennis career immediately upon completing her four-year university studies.

Balancing Collegiate Athletics and Media Engagements

Following her sudden online visibility, Kikuchi balanced her university table tennis commitments with select media appearances, including magazine cover shoots, ceremonial first pitches at professional baseball games, and serving as a promotional ambassador for the T League. Industry estimates place her annual earnings from brand sponsorships, magazine remuneration, and commercial appearances in the range of several million to 20 million yen. These ventures positioned her earnings well above standard compensation levels for players in domestic table tennis clubs.

In her retirement statement issued in October, Kikuchi reflected on her athletic journey, noting the challenges of starting late and expressing gratitude to those who supported her development. She opted to exit competitive table tennis at the conclusion of her undergraduate tenure.

Transition to Professional Acting With MU

Concurrent with her retirement announcement, Kikuchi confirmed her formal association with the talent agency “MU”, which represents established Japanese actresses such as Haru. The agency’s roster suggests an emphasis on professional development. Industry observers note that her background in high-discipline athletic training provides a foundation for the rigorous demands of acting.
