Shio Fukuda scored the opening goal and assisted the second in Karlsruher SC’s 4-0 victory against SV Darmstadt on Sunday, moving to the top of KSC’s scoring chart ahead of their DFB-Pokal match against former club Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Karlsruher SC striker Shio Fukuda enters the upcoming DFB-Pokal fixture against Borussia Mönchengladbach in strong form, having netted his third goal of the season in Sunday’s 4-0 win over SV Darmstadt. Fukuda opened the scoring in the sixth minute and quickly reacted to set up the team’s second goal. KSC coach Max Senft pointed to the tactical freedom given to the squad as a catalyst for the improved attacking rhythm.
Acquired permanently by Karlsruher SC in the summer following a one-year loan from Borussia, Fukuda missed the opening two matches of the campaign due to muscular issues. Since returning to the lineup, he has scored against VfL Wolfsburg, Hannover 96, and Darmstadt, earning 90-minute appearances under Senft across the last five fixtures. Speaking to the Japanese portal Football Zone, Fukuda outlined his ambitions for the current campaign, stating he aims to score 15 goals and eventually help propel KSC back into the Bundesliga. His goal against Darmstadt marked his third strike in the current season, which made him KSC’s top scorer after he bounced back from a brief goal drought following two goals in his first two league appearances of the campaign, during which KSC had scored only six goals in their previous seven games. Fukuda also stated that he wants to deliver results here first to draw attention, noting that the team trusts him more this year and that he must lead the way as a key player, fighting and doing everything he can to secure victories.
The upcoming DFB-Pokal tie at Borussia-Park marks Fukuda’s second meeting against his former club, for which he played starting from the U19 level. With an expanded role, increased defensive work rate in high presses, and growing trust from his teammates, the 22-year-old forward is positioned for a far more prominent role in the upcoming knockout fixture. Compared to the previous season, Fukuda has not only gained offensive strength but also improved his one-on-one dueling behavior, noting that he enjoys tackles and has developed further in counter-pressing and rapid transition moments.
