More than 23,000 people have taken part in an annual 10-mile race through the streets of Portsmouth.

The AJ Bell Great South Run returned on Sunday, with runners starting on the seafront close to the Avenue de Caen and finishing near Southsea Castle.

Participants enjoyed a fresh but sunny day for the event, which saw them go on a loop past some of the city's best-known landmarks, including the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Harbour, the dockyard complex and HM Naval Base.

Those who took part were awarded with specially designed blue and gold medals, inspired by the Mary Rose, to mark Portsmouth's centenary as a city.

The route is one of the most popular 10-mile (16km) road races in the world.

With a mainly flat course, it is seen as an intermediate distance between 10k and half marathon runs.

It was the 35th time the run has been staged since the first was held in Southampton in 1990.

It was cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2020 and high winds in 2024.

This year's was started by Olympian Iwan Thomas, who moments later donned his running kit and finished the course himself.

Dale Muffett was the first wheelchair participant to cross the finish line in Portsmouth, finishing in 51 minutes and 12 seconds.

On Saturday, as part of the race weekend, a 5km for adults and a junior race for nine to 15-year-olds was held.

Kids between three and eight completed the Mini Great South Run.
