Robin Gosens Defends Cologne's Said El Mala After Bloody Head Collision

Schalke 04 defender Robin Gosens defended FC Köln forward Said El Mala following a severe mid-air collision during a match, stating that attributing malicious intent to the young player is unfair. The incident occurred in the 37th minute of a scoreless draw at RheinEnergieStadion, leaving two Schalke players with significant head injuries.

Mid-Air Collision and Medical Emergency at RheinEnergieStadion

The match was halted for several minutes after Gosens, 32, and teammate Soufiane El-Faouzi, 24, crashed heads near the centerline. According to match reports from SPOX.com, El Mala had lightly shoved El-Faouzi in the air while contesting a ball, inadvertently redirecting him directly into the path of Gosens. Both Schalke players fell to the turf bleeding heavily, prompting referee Harm Osmers to immediately summon medical personnel onto the pitch.

FC Köln and Schalke 04 rushed to assist with the emergency treatment. Both players managed to leave the pitch on their own feet, though Gosens required physical support from staff members as the stadium crowd applauded. They were transported directly to a hospital in Gelsenkirchen during the halftime interval, as noted by SPOX.com.

Diagnosis and Injury Updates from Schalke 04

Schalke 04 later confirmed the full extent of the injuries sustained by the pair. Gosens suffered two deep lacerations to his forehead that required multiple stitches, while El-Faouzi sustained a forehead wound and a broken nose, according to n-tv.de. The club stated that decisions regarding their return to training and upcoming fixtures will be made on an individual basis.

The timing presents a squad depth challenge for Schalke, whose injury list already includes club captain Kenan Karaman. Whether Gosens and El-Faouzi can feature in the DFB-Pokal fixture away against Dynamo Dresden remains uncertain.
