Thibaut Courtois and Real Madrid Agree on Contract Extension Until 2028

Thibaut Courtois and Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement to extend the Belgian goalkeeper’s contract by one additional year, pushing his deal through June 2028, according to reports.

The 34-year-old shot-stopper, whose current contract was set to expire at the end of the season, has been characterized by club management as the best in the world. With formal signatures expected soon following the verbal consensus, the extension secures the veteran of the net for his future in the Spanish capital.

Contract Terms and the Path to an Agreement

Discussions between club directors and the player accelerated following internal evaluations regarding the squad’s core leadership. While Real Madrid typically applies a one-year renewal policy for players over the age of 30, the club’s hierarchy determined they could not risk losing their goalkeeper. Reporting noted that initial talks began as early as September, when sports daily AS indicated management wanted to resolve the goalkeeper’s future well before the final months of the campaign.

Courtois previously expressed public serenity regarding his contractual status, maintaining confidence that his pitch performances would dictate a prolongation. The new agreement bridges the gap from his previous expiration date in June 2027 through June 2028.

Workload and Squad Statistics in Madrid

Arriving from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has amassed 341 appearances for Real Madrid while collecting two UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga championships. His durability and production remain central to manager José Mourinho’s sporting project, despite defensive vulnerabilities across the squad during the current campaign.

Coverage highlighted that Courtois faced 37 shots on target across his first eight appearances of the season—a record at that stage since his arrival in Spain. Despite confronting nine goals conceded and only two clean sheets over that stretch, the Belgian maintained a 76 percent save percentage. To preserve his physical recovery and longevity at the club level, Courtois previously stepped back from international duty with the Belgium national team.

Future Goalkeeping Stability in Madrid

Securing Courtois’s services shields Real Madrid from an immediate search for a successor. Behind the Belgian, the club retains Andriy Lunin on a contract running through 2030, alongside academy prospects Javi Navarro and Fran González.
