An on-court interview at the Vienna tournament thrust Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini into the center of social media discussion regarding his relationship with Lorenzo Musetti, as reported. Following a straight-sets victory over Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry, Berrettini reacted with visible hesitation when an interviewer asked about Musetti’s recent title run in Lyon.

Rather than offering immediate praise for his compatriot, Berrettini paused, looked toward the camera, and asked off-microphone, “Siamo in diretta?” — or “Are we live?” Once the interviewer confirmed the broadcast was live, Berrettini offered a brief acknowledgment of Musetti’s physical struggles and subsequent tournament win before cutting the exchange short.

Social Media Activity Fuels Rumors of Player Fallout

The awkward post-match exchange quickly went viral, amplifying existing rumors across Instagram and X that the two players had experienced a falling out. Users on social media pointed out that Berrettini and Musetti had mutually unfollowed each other on Instagram, fueling intense online speculation about the state of their personal relationship.

Additional unconfirmed gossip on social platforms connected the alleged tension to personal matters involving Berrettini’s former partner, Vanessa Bellini. Amid mounting online commentary, Bellini issued a statement on Instagram addressing accusations regarding her past relationship with Berrettini, telling critics to “rinse your mouths out before speaking” while dismissing rumors of infidelity. Neither Berrettini nor Musetti has officially addressed the nature of their personal relationship.

Davis Cup Roster Shakes Up Italian Selection

The timing of the public speculation coincided with the announcement of Italy’s squad for the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. Italian captain Filippo Volandri selected a roster featuring Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori, leaving Berrettini off the initial team list.

Volandri Selects Roster Based on Rankings and Fitness

While some fans and commentators questioned whether personal dynamics influenced the roster decisions, official explanations point strictly to rankings and fitness. Volandri based his selections on current ATP standings, which place Darderi at No. 23 while Berrettini sits at No. 48 following extended injury layoffs. The captain noted that squad lists remain flexible and subject to change ahead of the tournament.
