Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United has deepened concerns about their poor Premier League form, putting Michael Carrick under pressure as the club records its worst league-season start since 1986. The result extended United’s winless run across all competitions and left them closer to the relegation zone than the top four. An early exit from the Carabao Cup has added to concerns about the team’s poor form.

Carrick guided Manchester United to Champions League qualification as interim manager last season before taking the job permanently. However, the recent results have raised questions about his future, with a Champions League trip to Como approaching.

United have dismissed Erik ten Hag in October 2024 and Ruben Amorim in January 2026. With the club struggling again, attention has turned to possible replacements if the hierarchy decides to make another managerial change. ESPN journalist Mark Ogden assessed six potential candidates, considering their records, availability and suitability for the job.

Manchester United Manager Candidates: Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte

Eddie Howe is among the options for Manchester United after leaving Newcastle United in August. The 48-year-old helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League twice and win the Carabao Cup in 2025, ending the club’s long wait for a major domestic trophy.

Howe also earned recognition for improving players such as Joelinton and Dan Burn. His availability makes him a practical option for United, although questions remain about whether his approach would inspire the squad and supporters. Ogden rated Howe 3/5, describing him as a sensible choice who might not provide everything Manchester United need.

Antonio Conte offers a different approach. The Italian won the Premier League with Chelsea in the 2016-17 season and collected several Serie A titles. His record of producing quick improvements at new clubs makes him an attractive candidate.

However, Conte’s confrontational management style and short spells at several clubs raise concerns about possible disagreements with players and executives. Ogden rated him 2/5, suggesting he could deliver an immediate lift but also bring a significant risk of conflict.

Manchester United Transfer News: McKenna, Hürzeler and Nagelsmann

Kieran McKenna, formerly of Ipswich Town, represents a less expensive alternative. The 40-year-old secured three promotions with Ipswich after leaving Manchester United’s coaching staff. His knowledge of the club and calm personality are advantages, but concerns remain about his experience at the highest level. Ogden rated McKenna 2/5.

Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler received one of the highest ratings. The 33-year-old has developed an energetic, tactically organised team and recorded notable results, including victories against Arsenal.

Hürzeler’s playing style and outspoken personality could appeal to Manchester United as the club considers a fresh direction. However, Brighton extended his contract, meaning United would likely need to pay significant compensation. Questions also remain about his readiness to manage a club of United’s size. Ogden rated him 4/5.

Julian Nagelsmann received the lowest rating of the candidates assessed. The Germany national team coach has built a reputation for his tactical ideas through previous spells at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig. However, difficulties during his time at Bayern Munich and with Germany, including reported friction with players, raise concerns about his suitability. Ogden rated him 1/5.

Thomas Tuchel Rated Highly as Manchester United Weigh Their Options

Thomas Tuchel also received a 4/5 rating from Ogden. The England manager has a strong record across European football, including winning the Champions League with Chelsea.

However, his contract with England runs through Euro 2028, making a move to Manchester United unlikely in the near future.

The search for a possible replacement highlights the challenge facing United as they attempt to find stability following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. The club must weigh immediate results against the need for a long-term plan, particularly after making multiple managerial changes in recent seasons.

Carrick now faces important fixtures against Como and Bournemouth, with results likely to influence the discussion surrounding his future. Manchester United have yet to establish consistent form, and continued struggles would increase scrutiny of the manager and the club’s leadership.
