Olympique de Marseille set an asking price of €30 million for defender Bamo Meïté during the summer transfer window, with Stade Rennais making inquiries before the steep valuation halted talks, according to reports from Football Club de Marseille and La Provence. The 24-year-old center-back has since worked his way back into manager Bruno Genesio’s squad after a turbulent period following a security incident in 2024.
During the summer window, Stade Rennais explored a deal to reinforce their defensive line and gathered information on Meïté’s availability, as reported by Football Club de Marseille. However, Marseille sporting advisor Medhi Benatia set the price tag at €30 million. That figure discouraged the Breton club from pursuing the transfer further, leaving the player under contract in Marseille.
The high valuation reflected Marseille's intent to maintain bargaining power over the player despite a complicated personal backdrop. To support the defender’s reintegration, club management offered assistance, including the option to consult a psychologist.
During the summer, the player had questioned his capacity to return to the Phoenician city, remaining cautious and on his guard. Meanwhile, an austerity cure at OM ended up benefiting several formerly unwanted players.
On the pitch, Meïté made his first official appearance of the season by starting in central defense alongside Nayef Aguerd during a European fixture against Olympiakos, which ended in a 0-1 defeat for Marseille, according to FootMarseille. Manager Bruno Genesio explained after the match that the selection aimed to manage playing time and provide rest for C.J. Egan-Riley following international duty.
Il a gagné quasiment tous ses duels, je pense.
Dans l’utilisation du ballon, il a été simple, mais efficace.
Genesio added: Sur ce match, pour moi, ça a été l’un des meilleurs joueurs de l’OM ce soir.
The appearance marked Meïté’s first start for Marseille since May 15, 2024, and his first at the Stade Vélodrome since March 10 of that year, according to La Provence. His intervening period included multiple injuries, a shooting that hit his car as well as those of Faris Moumbagna and Jean Onana, three short appearances under Roberto De Zerbi whom he did not convince, two loan spells including a pitiful one at Montpellier and a fruitful one at Lorient, and physical setbacks during a preparation ruined by a yet another physical problem before the rise of the CJ Egan-Riley and Aguerd central defensive pairing.
Marseille returns to domestic competition with an upcoming fixture against Angers.
