Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal will begin serving a four-match suspension this weekend after the RFEF Appeal Committee dismissed the club’s challenge on Friday, October 23, 2026. The federation upheld the sanction initially handed down by the Disciplinary Committee following the player’s sending-off against FC Barcelona at the Estadio de La Cartuja.
The Disciplinary Committee originally categorized the incident involving Bernal and Barcelona player Lamine Yamal as an assault under article 103.1 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, applying the minimum four-match ban for that infraction. The verdiblanco club argued that the official referee’s match report did not accurately reflect the events on the pitch and requested that the offense be reclassified as violent conduct rather than assault. The federation rejected those arguments, maintaining the strict four-match penalty.
Real Betis decided against asking the Administrative Tribunal for Sport (TAD) for a precautionary suspension. Consequently, manager Manuel Pellegrini will be without the Uruguayan international for four fixtures across domestic competitions. Bernal will miss La Liga matches against Celta, Málaga, and Elche, alongside a Copa del Rey fixture against Navalcarnero scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The club may study a potential appeal to the TAD at a later date, but the objective would be establishing a legal precedent for future interpretations rather than altering the current punishment.
Despite missing domestic action through mid-November, the suspension does not apply to international club competitions. Bernal remains eligible for selection by Pellegrini when Real Betis travels to face Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park on November 4, 2026, for the fourth matchday of the Champions League league phase. In domestic play, the midfielder will be available for El Gran Derbi against Sevilla FC, slated for Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 18:30 local time at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. Bernal also missed a portion of Friday training due to tightness in his calf, leaving the club monitoring his physical condition alongside his disciplinary status.
