It's been a long time coming for the FIFA Women's Club World Cup. The tournament was established in May 2021 and will kick-off in the United States in 2028.

Gotham FC in the NWSL is the first league team from the United States to be selected in the CONACAF division. The selection will be based on championship and club ranking. That means other teams in the league will have an opportunity to get into the dance.

The easiste way for an NWSLteam to qualify is to edge out Gotham FC during the playoffs for the NWSL Championship. Another way is to secure the league shield next season to move up in club ranking.

Gotham FC is a stacked roster and has been since it won two championships in 2023 and 2025. The organization has several national and international stars including Midge Purce and Jaeilin Howell from the U.S. and Sam Kerr from Australia.

Gotham FC sets the standard as NWSL teams chase 2028 Club World Cup qualification

The tournament will need to keep its stars in focus, so having other NWSL clubs will be important to help the exposure of the tournament. Many have spoken that the NWSL is a premiere league with top facilities for women's soccer.

The league and the tournmanent would benefit each other if more teams were represented. If the Denver Summit FC could advance with a performance they could raise the profile of both the new expansion team and the cup.

With English defender Gemma Bonner and American defender Carson Pickett, the team has stars on both an American and European level. But they need to qualify either this year or next year.

Which is why it is very impressive how dominant and in contention that Gotham FC has been. The team has continued to be one of the more popular and best run teams in the league. It is evident of their selection into the cup.

Many teams will be dying to get in for the tournament and the NWSL will have many other leagues in both Europe and Latin America to compete with. Corinthians club in Brazil has also advanced.

On the men's side there are many tournaments that have helped raise the profile in the U.S. and abroad. Now if those tournament can do the same for the women's side it could pay off in the long run.

The NWSL needs to do one thing for it to benefit the most. Have more than just Gotham FC represent themselves in 2028.
