The Municipality of Moita has entered its municipal walking football team into the upcoming National Walking Football Cup, expanding a local project designed to combat sedentary lifestyles among older adults, as reported by municipal sources and regional media coverage.
Walking football is an adaptation of traditional association football played strictly at a walking pace. The modification is intended to drastically reduce physical impact and minimize the risk of injury for participants. The initiative in Moita is open to both men and women over the age of 50. According to official municipal documentation and social media updates from the Municipality of Moita, the program functions as both a public health initiative and a competitive sports project aimed at fostering active aging and social inclusion among demographic groups traditionally underrepresented in organized sports.
While recreational activity remains a core goal, the municipal squad actively competes. The team’s entry into the National Walking Football Cup represents a shift from local exercise sessions to regional tournament play.
The sports season for the municipal walking football initiative runs continuously from September through June. Squad training sessions take place twice a week at the Complexo Desportivo da Fonte da Prata. Sessions are scheduled for every Tuesday and Friday evening, starting at 19:15 local time.
The municipal administration coordinates the project through its Division of Sport and Youth (Divisão de Desporto e Juventude). Local residents seeking participation details, registration criteria, or training requirements can contact the department directly via email at [email protected].
