IPS AND DOWNS: Ipswich vs Nottingham Forest LIVE: Glasner’s struggling Trees travel to Tractor Boys for Friday Night Football – updates

NOTTINGHAM FOREST head to Ipswich tonight to kick off another weekend of Premier League action!

Oliver Glasner‘s side were narrowly beaten by reigning champions Arsenal last Sunday to leave them 19th in the table with just one win – the Austrian boss is under increasing pressure at his new club.

In their first season back in the top-flight, Gary O’Neil’s side have been a mixed bag after seven games, winning three and losing four to sit tenth in the table.

Enciso tries to surge through central midfield but is squeezed by Gibbs-White and McAtee.

It gives Ipswich a dangerous free-kick opportunity, presenting their first chance to test Sels.

Forest triumphed 4-2 on their most recent visit to Portman Road in the 2024-25 season, though they have not claimed back-to-back league away wins against Ipswich since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 Championship campaigns.

There is still a long way to go, but the Tricky Trees are doing everything right to achieve successive victories here.

That opening goal is a prime example of why wing-backs are so crucial to Glasner’s system.

GOAL!

FOREST TAKE THE LEAD!

1-0!

It felt like it was coming, and the visitors now have their reward.

Delap’s brilliant hold-up play sparks the move before Munoz takes over from Gibbs-White, charging down the right.

The wing-back whips an inviting cross to the back post, where Williams ghosts in unmarked to sweep a first-time finish past Walton and in.

A breathless start to proceedings with the game swinging back and forth as Ipswich fire off another speculative effort.

Fatawu cuts in from the right flank and lets fly with a fierce left-footed shot aiming for the top corner, but it drifts just over the woodwork.

Only Premier League fixtures involving Chelsea (30) and Brighton (28) have produced more goals this term than Ipswich’s 26 (11 for, 15 against), and on this evidence, the deadlock surely won’t last long.

CLOSE!

Forest have made a bright start and former Tractor Boy Delap nearly breaks the deadlock.

The striker is given plenty of room out on the right, shifts the ball onto his preferred right foot, and drills a low effort toward the near post.

It beats the keeper, but only ripples the side netting!

SAVED!

Forest fire an early warning shot as Gibbs-White curls a deep ball into the area from the right.

It drops invitingly for Jair Cunha, who spins quickly and gets a shot away, but Walton tracks it all the way and stands tall to make a solid stop.

Enciso is sure to be central to Ipswich’s attacking output and registers the hosts’ first attempt.

The Paraguay international lets fly from range with his right foot, but his strike sails over the crossbar, helped along by the wind howling around the stadium.

Forest have enjoyed the more confident opening as the visitors, seeing plenty of the ball early on.

Munoz is found down the right flank from an advanced wing-back role and attempts to whip a cross into the centre for Delap, but the defence clears.

It will be intriguing to see what kind of impact the Forest striker can make tonight against the club where he made his name.

Ipswich have triumphed in two of their three Premier League home matches this season (L1) — equalling their win tally from the previous 25 fixtures at Portman Road (D6, L17).

They now aim to string together back-to-back top-flight home victories for the first time since a four-game sequence in December/January 2001-02.

Players take a knee, highlighting that racism has no room in our beautiful game, and Nottingham Forest get the action started here at Portman Road.

The two sides make their way onto the Portman Road pitch beneath stormy Suffolk skies as Premier League action looms.

First, a look at Opta’s live win numbers before kick-off.

Despite a difficult start to the campaign, a 42.7% favouritism tag goes to Nottingham Forest, while Ipswich Town hold a 31.3% win probability.

A draw stands at a 26% likelihood, and that outcome would lift Forest out of the relegation zone ahead of this weekend’s matches.

Forest fans receive a welcome boost with Gibbs-White back in contention, as Glasner makes two changes from the side that lost to reigning Premier League champions Arsenal last time out.

The club captain sat out only that match, and with the Tricky Trees struggling for goals, his return is a timely lift.

Milenkovic replaces Diomande in the back three for the second alteration, while Nicolas Dominguez is absent altogether.

O’Neil makes a couple of alterations from the side that pushed Manchester City close in a 3-2 defeat.

Maeda found the net last time out, but Fatawu starts on the right flank tonight.

Greaves drops out and Philogene comes in, as O’Neil sacrifices a centre-back to switch Ipswich to a more familiar back four.

On the bench for Forest: John Victor, Ousmane Diomande, Ibrahim Sangare, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chris Wood, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, Luca Netz and Ola Aina.

Forest line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation: Matz Sels; Jair Cunha, Nikola Milenkovic, Murillo; Daniel Munoz, James McAtee, Xaver Schlager, Neco Williams; Dan Ndoye, Morgan Gibbs-White; Liam Delap.

SUBS: Kjell Scherpen, Darnell Furlong, Azor Matusiwa, Zian Flemming, Jacob Greaves, Chuba Akpom, Marcelino Nunez, Daizen Maeda and Jack Clarke are named on the Ipswich bench.

Ipswich Town line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape: Christian Walton; Abdoul Ouattara, Dara O’Shea, Issa Diop, Leif Davis; Florentino, Exequiel Palacios; Abdul Fatawu, Julio Enciso, Jaden Philogene-Bidace; Emersonn.

Pressure is already mounting on Nottingham Forest and Oliver Glasner following a tough start to the campaign featuring just a single victory.

Having recovered from consecutive defeats against Leeds in league and cup fixtures by drawing with Liverpool and Spurs before beating Aston Villa, Forest have since hit a rough patch of three straight losses, dropping them below the dotted line.

Beyond their points tally, Glasner has other concerns, as a league-low return of just five goals is a major factor driving their current struggles.

Known for leaving it late, Ipswich sit 10th in the Premier League following a positive start of three victories from their first seven matches back in the top tier.

Every single one of those wins has relied on a goal on or beyond the 90-minute mark.

While that trait is handy, Gary O’Neil will be eager for his team to finish matches off earlier as they target consecutive home wins in the top flight for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign.

Good evening and welcome to our live Premier League coverage as Ipswich Town host Nottingham Forest at Portman Road for the first match of Gameweek 8.
