Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright have disagreed on their prediction for the upcoming meeting between their old sides Liverpool and Arsenal, in what is set to be a blockbuster clash at Anfield.
The Reds have started the season positively under Andoni Iraola, suffering just the one defeat this campaign to Manchester City, which came with the caveat of being down to ten men during the second half. That has put the team near the upper end of the Premier League table, while performances and results have been positive in cup competitions.
Each new match gives the manager more information on the players he can trust and how they are fitting into the tactical principles that he wants to set out.
The coming test against Arsenal could be the toughest yet, alongside that Man City encounter, with the current champions of England showing signs of intent to recapture the title once again this season.
There is a winning mentality with the Gunners under Mikel Arteta, as well as strength in depth that would leave almost any team jealous of the reserves that can be called upon during a taxing fixture schedule.
That's not to say there aren't weaknesses in either camp, with Liverpool yet to truly show a complete performance in the league, while Arsenal have stumbled at times, especially in recent fixtures with Brighton and Fleetwood Town.
It makes for an interesting encounter at Anfield on Sunday, one which has divided opinions between former players. For Ian Wright, there is a gut feeling that his former side, Arsenal, will run out as winners on the day, after being asked to predict the scoreline on The Overlap.
He said: "I think we beat them… You know the thing is, I think obviously this is the one that kind of defines Liverpool if they’re coming up because you’re looking at Mac Allister, even Gakpo... I’m going to go draw, I think we get a draw out of this game. Deep down I would’ve gone 2-1 for myself, but go on 1-1…"
Roy Keane then asked him about his "gut feeling, and that made Wright switch his prediction. "We beat them 2-1," the former striker said, as Keane confirmed his prediction and said: "Go on then, go 2-1 to Arsenal."
Carragher appeared to have the same dilemma in the opposite direction, as he said when asked for his prediction: "I actually do think 1-1, but shall I go for Liverpool? What do you think Gary [Neville]? I’m too biased.”
Neville also told the former defender to back what he believes, and Carragher responded: "2-1 Liverpool," setting out an interesting difference in opinion.
It certainly shows just how finely balanced the game could be, with Liverpool at its best more than capable of taking on one of the top teams in the division.
It remains to be seen whether that type of performance will follow from the Reds on yet another big occasion at Anfield, or whether there will be yet more that needs to be learned from a team in a position that the club would like to be in.
