Freiburg’s Philipp Treu on Jürgen Klopp, His Germany Debut, and National Team Life
Freiburg's Philipp Treu on Jürgen Klopp, His Germany Debut, and National Team Life

SC Freiburg defender Philipp Treu earned his first senior call-up to the Germany national team and extended his stay to three weeks following an unexpected conversation with coaching staff member Jürgen Klopp during a team dinner, according to reports published in Bild am Sonntag. Philipp Treu belonged to the major unknowns within the national team circle only a few weeks prior.

An Unplanned Extension at the Dinner Table

However, two days prior to the initial departure date, former Liverpool manager and current DFB director Jürgen Klopp approached the 25-year-old from behind during a meal. Klopp told him he would remain with the team for another week, asking if he had booked any vacation time. Treu noted that he would have gladly canceled any holiday plans to stay with the squad. He did not foresee that his time would stretch to two weeks and ultimately three matches, simply trying to give gas, which evidently went down well not just with the national coach but with the others as well.

Debut and Emotional Milestones

He pointed to the pre-match lineup and the singing of the national anthem in Amsterdam as his most emotional moment on the trip, recalling watching matches on television with his brother as a child, standing in front of the television with neighborhood children, placing their hands on their chests and singing along loudly while his parents sat in the tribune, making him very proud. He also discussed keeping his first match-worn jersey on a clothing rack at home alongside a few other special jerseys after clearing it up with his girlfriend Jana, noting that the grass stains remain visible even after a 30-degree wash. During the lineup, he recalled seeing 1.95-meter-tall Dutch players whom he described as real brutes, causing a momentary thought of what he was actually doing there.

Impressions of Jürgen Klopp and Joshua Kimmich

Reflecting on working under Klopp, Treu described the coach’s ability to connect with players, offer reassurance, and maintain a rigorous tactical approach, confirming him as a people catcher who knows how to handle players, give them encouragement, and recognize when someone might need a hug while remaining detail-obsessed tactically with a clear philosophy. He recalled a motivational video featuring Liverpool’s pressing style that energized the players and made them want to start immediately and implement that pressing on the pitch. Before his debut, Klopp helped take away his nervousness by telling him, Hey boy, have fun, enjoy it. For me it is also the first time. We always dreamed of that, which helped him so that once the match started, it felt like a normal football game with very little nervousness. Treu praised Kimmich’s relentless competitive drive on the training pitch and during warm-up activations.

Future Ambitions and Coaching Aspirations

Beyond his playing career, Treu holds a B-license coaching qualification and expressed interest in eventually moving into management, having had managers such as Sebastian Hoeneß, Matthias Jaissle, Fabian Hürzeler, Christian Streich, and Julian Schuster. Domestically, Freiburg entered the recent matchday sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table. When asked if there had been any fighting words from DFB colleagues from Dortmund or Munich regarding Freiburg standing in first place before the matchday, Treu answered, No, for God’s sake! adding that people notice they have great respect for what Freiburg achieves and that they have Freiburg on their radar.
