A new rumor about the early plans for the top two matches at WrestleMania 42 may suggest a major heel turn is coming from a top WWE star.

While we are still six months from the 2027 edition of the “showcase of the immortals,” the WWE has long tried to plan its top matches for the event well in advance. That tradition returned to being the norm once company legend Triple H officially took over the creative direction a few years ago.

While injuries and fan reactions can always change plans, now would be a good time to start plotting out a rough draft for the Night 1 and Night 2 headliners for the first WrestleMania ever on foreign soil. According to Wrestle Votes, WWE decision-makers already have two specific matches in mind.

In a new report from the industry insider, Oba Femi vs. Roman Reigns is still penciled in as one of the main events. That claim would align with reports in recent months that the brand was eyeing a showdown between its biggest and hottest stars. However, the other match may be a letdown for fans, and that allegedly will be a rematch between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk.

Is WWE planning a Cody Rhodes or CM Punk heel turn?

Finding out that WWE is thinking about going back to the Rhodes and Punk well will probably get a sigh from a good number of fans. While the build-up to their match at SummerSlam was solid, the bout itself underwhelmed. Especially when compared to the other headliner of the two-night event, Reigns vs. Seth Rollins.

Yes, both men are two of the most popular stars on the roster, but why would the company want to rehash a rivalry that did not deliver epic moments? Well, that may be because they are planning something major to come before or during the rematch. It is possible that WWE is considering a heel turn for either man.

For a few months, the company has been trying to tell a story of Rhodes tapping into a darker side because being a true blue hero is not working for him anymore. It makes sense if this is all a build to his long-rumored turn before or at WrestleMania 42.

Punk can sometimes act like a heel and still get cheers from fans. Turning him would be trickier, but it is not impossible. Furthermore, there may be a belief that a heel version of Punk can be extremely helpful in lifting up younger stars they are trying to turn into main event players.
