Newell’s Old Boys has initiated a provisional suspension against former club president Ignacio Astore and two key administrators from his past tenure, as financial audits estimate the club’s debt at roughly $35 million.
Following a recent victory against Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero, Newell’s board of directors confirmed the provisional suspensions during a Tuesday announcement. The measure targets Ignacio Astore—who has faced intense criticism over the mounting club debt—alongside former secretary Sharon Romero and former treasurer Hernán Cardozo.
Second vice president Hernán Botta explained to LT8 that the disciplinary action applies specifically to individuals who held decision-making authority over economic and financial matters up until December. The club initiated the sanctions as part of a broader administrative summary covering the entire previous administration.
Current executives first revealed initial figures from an audit of the previous administration back in May at the parque de la Independencia, highlighting severe financial strain. Five months later, Botta stated that the overall liability calculation has not decreased and currently stands at approximately $35 million.

The dean of the Faculty of Law of the Universidad Nacional de Rosario (UNR) defended the disciplinary actions, arguing that sufficient grounds exist to suspend individuals whose signatures committed the club to financial obligations that effectively tripled its liabilities.
The club scheduled an ordinary assembly for Thursday at 18 inside the Claudio Newell indoor stadium. Members will vote on the general financial report and balance sheet covering the period from July 1, 2025, to June 30. Also, corrections and approval of the previous period will be discussed.
While the suspension of the former executives will be presented during Thursday’s gathering, Botta emphasized that the disciplinary measure itself is not subject to a member vote.
Alongside the internal investigations, club leadership confirmed their full backing of manager Frank Darío Kudelka. Botta credited the head coach with performing essential work during the institutional rebuilding process.
With only three fixtures remaining in the Torneo Clausura 2026, board officials stressed that the focus remains entirely on securing strong results on the pitch as the season draws to a close.
