Tennis fans were delighted to see Roger Federer in attendance at the Shanghai Masters final, with many suggesting that the Swiss legend attracted more attention than the match itself.

The final took place on Sunday between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Rafael Jodar, with the 25th seed claiming the title after a remarkable comeback. Fokina recovered from a set and a break down to win 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

Jodar dominated the opening set, but Fokina fought back to force a deciding set. The Spaniard also required medical attention for thigh and foot issues during the match, allowing Fokina to capitalize and secure the victory after two hours and 27 minutes. However, the match was not the only talking point. Federer’s presence in the stands drew a huge ovation when the broadcast cameras spotted the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

A video of the crowd’s reaction circulated online, prompting fans to celebrate the Swiss star’s enduring popularity.

One fan playfully wrote on Instagram:

“Everyone just want to see Federer, who cares about the match😂.”

Another praised the reaction to Federer:

“The whole stadium erupted, that’s Federer aura-the real GOAT is back👑.”

Along similar lines, a few other fans chimed in:

“The king is in the house!😃💪🏻.”

“The best that ever was and always will be.”

“The goat is in the place🐐.”

Roger Federer won the Shanghai Masters singles title twice during his career. He defeated Gilles Simon in the 2014 final before claiming his second title in 2017 with a victory over his longtime rival, Rafael Nadal.

The Swiss legend was also recently seen playing on a floating tennis court at Shenzhen Talent Park in China. The exhibition match was part of the On Thanks for Playing event series organized by his sportswear brand, On.

Roger Federer reflected on tennis’ growth in China

Following his exhibition appearance in October as part of the On Thanks for Playing series, Roger Federer spoke to Forbes about the growing enthusiasm for tennis in China, particularly among younger players. He also discussed how initiatives like the exhibition could help inspire the next generation.

“It’s been wonderful to see the passion and enthusiasm for tennis in China, especially among the younger generation. Through On Thanks for Playing, we have a great opportunity to connect with these young players and encourage them to continue enjoying the sport,” Federer said.

He added:

“Hopefully, through initiatives like these and the work we’re doing with On, we can play a small part in inspiring more young people in China to pick up a racket and stay involved in tennis.”

Roger Federer also said that the exhibition was not simply an opportunity to share his experience with young players. He said he drew inspiration from them, too, and that such moments reminded him why he fell in love with tennis in the first place.
