Chris Dobey claimed victory at Players Championship 32 in Den Bosch on Thursday, securing his third ProTour title of the season with a brand-new set of darts. The Englishman was delighted with his performance after a difficult spell on the televised stage and is now hoping to carry that form into the major tournaments coming up over the next few weeks.
Dobey revealed that he had decided to make a change to his equipment just before travelling to the Netherlands, a gamble that could hardly have worked out better.
"I was just saying yesterday I just need a bit of consistency back," he explained in his post-match interview with the PDC. "I've changed darts to a brand-new barrel, a brand-new, different set this week. I took them out of the wrapper at home the day before I travelled."
With his place at the Players Championship Finals already secured, Dobey felt he had little to lose by experimenting with the new setup. "I thought, 'Hey, why not?' I'm safe for the Players Championship Finals, just try them. If it goes, it goes. If it doesn't, back to the drawing board," he continued. "And yeah, it went! I felt great and produced some good stuff. Unfortunately, I've only got one set, so Target, you'll have to make some more!"
Diobey in action
One of Dobey's most impressive performances came against Krzysztof Ratajski, with the Englishman producing a remarkable display of scoring that left his Polish opponent with few opportunities.
"It takes some doing. You've got to play that stuff against the likes of Krzysztof," Dobey admitted. "Look what he did last week. He just never gives up. He's a little terrier, and to beat somebody as comfortably as I did, you've got to be proud."
He was also pushed hard in an entertaining semi-final against William O'Connor, who had impressed in his previous match. Dobey recalled a conversation with Joe Cullen about the Irishman's quarter-final performance before their meeting.
"I was sitting at the table with Joe, and he said how Willie played in the quarter-finals, and, 'Trust me, he'll not play like that again against me!'" Dobey recalled. "But yeah, another great player. Nice to see him doing well."
The 36-year-old was particularly pleased with his finishing, having put extra work into his game following some disappointing results on television.
"I'm just delighted to get another win after recent performances on TV. I've had a few struggles, but the doubles were brilliant today," he said. "You can tell I've been working a little bit at home, so I'm delighted the hard work's paid off."
With three Players Championship titles now secured in 2026, Dobey was asked about his next ambitions, with the Premier League mentioned in the conversation.
"No, I'm only joking!" he laughed, before turning his attention to the upcoming televised tournaments. "As long as I'm playing consistently, looking up to TV tournaments. Got the Grand Slam next week. Thank God I don't need to do the qualifier!" he said.
The Grand Slam of Darts is his next major assignment, with Dobey already looking ahead to the challenges awaiting him in the closing weeks of the season. "It's all practice, getting ready for the Grand Slam. It's going to be a tough one now with the change of format, but I'm knuckling down. I'm going to work hard and try to work my backside off for the back end of the year."
With significant ranking money to defend at the World Darts Championship, Dobey is also determined to improve his position in the world rankings. "I know what I've got to defend at the World Championship, so I'm looking to dig deep and hopefully get up them rankings again."
Before those major events, the ProTour returns to Leicester next week for the final two Players Championship tournaments of the season, giving Dobey another opportunity to build on his return to winning form.
"It's all about consistency, and that's all I wanted. It's given us that confidence again," he concluded. "I'm going to take that into next week. It doesn't stop now. Leicester next week, and we'll be back."
