Real Madrid star turns down interest from Arsenal and Manchester City

Arsenal’s interest in Arda Guler appears to have run into a firm wall, with the Real Madrid attacking midfielder now set to stay in Spain after agreeing fresh terms. According to TeamTalk, the north London club were among the sides to explore a summer move, only for events in Madrid to shut that door, for now.

Guler had emerged as one of the most intriguing names on the market. Arsenal and Manchester City both saw an opening and, as reported, “held talks with Guler’s camp over a potential summer move to England”. From Arsenal’s perspective, that tracks with a wider search for added creativity and technical sharpness in the final third, especially from players capable of operating between lines and changing games quickly.

Arda Guler stays central to Real Madrid plans

There was a stage when the situation looked worth monitoring closely. “There was hope among the interested parties that Guler’s position at the Bernabeu could become less certain under new head coach Jose Mourinho,” and that possibility encouraged contact from England. Arsenal and City both believed there may be room to present a compelling sporting project.

Yet the message coming back from Madrid was increasingly strong. Guler “had been given assurances by the club’s hierarchy that he remained a key part of their long-term plans”. That is significant in any negotiation, and even more so when “Guler is also understood to be a major favourite of president Florentino Perez”. Once those internal signals align, the chances of extracting a young elite talent become very slim.

Mourinho’s stance appears to have mattered too. The report states he “made clear his admiration for the Turkey international”, and that support has translated into visible opportunity on the pitch. Guler has been featuring regularly, with his stock rising again at just the moment Premier League clubs were testing the ground.

Real Madrid contract extension changes Arsenal picture

The decisive development is straightforward. “TEAMtalk can reveal that Guler’s future is now effectively settled after he agreed a two-year contract extension in the past week, committing himself to Real Madrid until 2031 at the earliest.” For Arsenal, that effectively ends any immediate route to a deal.

The timing also matters. Arsenal and City “had already been informed during the summer window that Madrid intended to extend Guler’s contract and that negotiations were close to an agreement”. In other words, this has been moving one way for a while, even if external interest remained genuine.

His display against Roma only strengthened Madrid’s thinking, with Guler producing “two assists as Real came from behind to claim a stunning 4-3 win over Roma”. Performances like that reinforce belief internally and inflate the difficulty for any admirer hoping to tempt him away.

Premier League interest remains notable

Arsenal were far from alone. “Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have also had contact with Guler’s camp during the year,” which says plenty about his standing across Europe. He is viewed as one of the continent’s top young attacking talents, and clubs at this level rarely make those checks without serious appreciation for the player’s ceiling.

For Arsenal, this now looks like one of those situations to park rather than pursue. With Guler “now firmly committed to the Spanish giants”, attention will have to turn elsewhere in the market, even if admiration for the player is unlikely to fade any time soon.

Our View

From an Arsenal point of view, this is frustrating reading because Guler feels exactly like the sort of player the squad could do with, inventive, brave in tight spaces and capable of deciding matches with one piece of quality. When you hear that Arsenal “held discussions with Guler’s representatives” and tried “attempting to persuade him to leave the Spanish capital”, it shows the club recognised the opportunity. The problem is that recognition means very little if the move never gets beyond that stage.

What stings most is that this was not a random name. This is a player of genuine pedigree, and the report makes clear there was at least some belief that his place “could become less certain under new head coach Jose Mourinho”. If Arsenal thought there was an opening, supporters will naturally ask whether enough was done to make the project irresistible.

At the same time, realism matters. Once Real Madrid are offering assurances, once Florentino Perez is fully behind the player, and once a new deal is agreed until 2031, there is only so much any Premier League side can do. Still, as a disappointed Arsenal fan, it feels like another near miss in the hunt for top-end attacking quality. If the club want to compete for the biggest prizes, they need to land players from this bracket, not just admire them from a distance.
