Falcons' Penix and Buccaneers' Mayfield aiming to help rebounding teams take control of NFC South

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Welcome to the NFC South, where inconsistency and seemingly disastrous starts to this season have not undermined the aspirations of the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After all, it is a division won by teams finishing with losing records two of the past four seasons, including a year ago when Carolina, the Falcons and Bucs all went 8-9. The Panthers by tiebreaker claimed their first title since 2015 and currently sit atop the standings again with a 3-3 record.

Atlanta (3-4) and Tampa Bay (2-5) are lurking despite slow starts, with each hoping to bolster bids to take control of a wide-open race when the rivals meet Sunday.

With Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback, the Falcons have won three of five following an 0-2 start that included a 31-point loss at Carolina. The third-year pro, who missed much of lase season with a knee injury, is coming off throwing for three touchdowns without an interception in a 29-20 victory over previously unbeaten San Francisco.

The Bucs dropped four straight to begin the season, but are feeling better about themselves after riding a rejuvenated defense and relentless rushing attack to win two of their past three. Quarterback Baker Mayfield returned from missing three games due to a dislocated thumb to help lead last week's 43-13 rout of the division-leading Panthers, who yielded 258 yards on the ground.

“I think that's our calling card,” Bucs coach Todd Bowles said. “We play a lot better when we run the ball successfully.”

The Falcons are building a new identity, too.

Since Penix took over at quarterback, Atlanta leads the NFL in scoring, though first-year coach Kevin Stefanski noted the team is also making strides in other important areas.

“I just thought we were a very physical football team (against the 49ers),” Stefanski said. “That's got to be how we play. That's in our DNA. It's got to be what we're about.”

Sunday will be a homecoming of sorts for Penix, who grew up in nearby Dade City, Florida, and attended high school in Tampa.

“It's exciting, and I imagine I should have a lot of people coming to the game,” the Falcons quarterback said. “My mom, she usually knows that head count. But it's gonna be exciting to be able to get out there.”
