South African talent's switch to Ireland officially ruled out
Springboks

Reports suggesting Jonathan Roche is considering a switch to Ireland have been dismissed by Stormers director of rugby John Dobson, who insists the young centre is committed to South Africa.

Speculation emerged in recent days that Roche could leave the Stormers for Ireland, potentially opening the door to a change in international allegiance.

However, Dobson has firmly rejected the claims while explaining why the 23-year-old will miss Saturday’s United Rugby Championship clash against the Scarlets at Cape Town Stadium.

Roche is unavailable due to concussion, with Markus Muller named as his replacement.

“We couldn’t consider Jonny Roche because he’s got a concussion,” the Stormers director of rugby said today, according to SA Rugby Mag.

“But how a story gets written that says he’s considering Ireland when he’s never considered anything else other than playing for the Stormers and South Africa.

“I’m pleased that was refuted by his agent yesterday. So Jonny is out purely because of concussion.

“We wanted to give Markus a game; he’s only on 14 minutes against Glasgow [last season] so it actually just works out perfectly for us."

Roche has emerged as one of South Africa’s most promising young centres after progressing through the Western Province and Stormers systems.

Following impressive spells with Bishops and the University of Cape Town, he made his senior debut in 2024 before receiving an invitation to a Springbok alignment camp in 2025.

Known for his powerful ball-carrying, sharp footwork, handling ability and aggressive defence, Roche has continued to attract attention as his career develops.

Dobson also confirmed that Roche has agreed to an extension with the Stormers, dismissing suggestions that he could leave South Africa.

“His extension is agreed. That article was preposterous yesterday,” Dobson added. “He’s got no interest in it. There was no comment from Jonny to say, ‘I’m considering it.’

“He’s agreed to his extension. He’s committed here. He wants to wear the green and gold like all these youngsters here.

“That is really smoke without any form of fire. I think he’s got very close ties to Zimbabwe and he’d love to help them, but that’s not going to happen either.

“The fact that he’s already been to an alignment camp is magic from SA Rugby. It shows he’s on the radar and this is where he wants to be.”

Roche’s agent also confirmed on Tuesday that the centre’s ambition is to represent the Springboks.

While he is eligible to play for Ireland and Zimbabwe, the latter previously approached him about representing the country two years ago, only for Roche to reject the opportunity.
