Lucy Shuker targets 100th title at Abingdon tournament

Lucy Shuker will compete at the Abingdon WC50 Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, taking place at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1.

The three-time Paralympic medallist and nine-time Grand Slam doubles finalist will compete in the women’s doubles, aiming for her 100th career doubles title before retiring at the end of the season.

Ms Shuker said: "I won both my first singles and doubles titles at British tournaments, and it would be incredibly special to come full circle and bring up the 100 doubles titles in front of a home crowd in Abingdon, especially in this 50th anniversary year for wheelchair tennis.

"I’m really excited for the challenge and to getting out on court."

She is one of three British players ranked in the top four who will compete at the tournament.

The others are 2024 singles champion Abbie Breakwell and British No.4 Ruby Bishop.

Both have achieved career-best singles rankings inside the world’s top 30 this year.

Players from 14 countries will compete across men’s, women’s and quad singles and doubles draws.

Oxfordshire’s Oliver Cox, from Watchfield, is aiming for a third consecutive quad singles title.

Mr Cox said: "Competing in Abingdon is always special as it’s where I started playing wheelchair tennis and it’s where I won my first international singles title in 2023.

"I’m playing to a much higher standard now and I’m really looking forward to returning to the courts in Abingdon."

Cox was a member of the triumphant Lexus GB World Team Cup Junior Team in 2003, alongside former French Open and US Open junior doubles champion Ruben Harris.

Harris is hoping to complete his first full season in senior competition on a high in Abingdon.

Spectator entry to the event is free across all three days.
