Nearly 200 players join Whitehaven rugby talent programme

The Whitehaven Talent Development Programme, launched by Whitehaven Rugby League Club, aims to nurture promising youth players from across the region through a series of structured training sessions and educational modules.

A total of 188 players have already registered, along with six coaches who have registered their interest.

The programme will be led by Dean Vaughan, who has made more than 150 appearances for Whitehaven, and Paul Farrell, both of whom have extensive coaching experience at the grassroots level.

A club spokesman said: "We are delighted to introduce our senior coaching team for the Whitehaven Talent Development Programme: Dean Vaughan as head coach and Paul Farrell as lead coach.

"For us, it’s vital that this programme is driven by coaches who understand our area, know our grassroots clubs, and share a genuine passion for developing local talent."

The programme will deliver 10 daytime sessions per year during school holidays, specifically on Fridays, to avoid clashes with club commitments.

It also features educational modules in addition to on-field training.

Mr Vaughan and Mr Farrell will visit clubs over the next fortnight to talk through how the programme works.

The club is encouraging more coaches to get involved, emphasising that top-level experience is not required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to support young players.

Coaches are not expected to attend every session, and those who can commit to at least half are welcome to join.
