Salisbury boxer Luca Mahony wins in Guernsey with knockdown

The 19-year-old, Luca Mahony, represented the Western Counties in an international team boxing event in the Channel Islands.

Mahony competed in the light-welterweight division and finished strongly, dropping his opponent in the final round. All judges awarded the contest to the Salisbury fighter.

He has trained at Salisbury Boxing Club for five years and is coached by Walty Smith, who leads Team Smith at the club.

Mr Smith said: "He is an incredible talent who could go a long way in the sport."

The Guernsey result marks another step in Mahony’s boxing development. Representing the Western Counties also gave him experience of competing in an international team event.

Mahony’s progress has followed five years of training at the Salisbury club. The victory also adds to his growing reputation as an amateur boxer from the city.

Attention now turns to Salisbury City Hall on Saturday, October 24, where a number of Team Smith boxers will compete before a home crowd.

The event will provide an opportunity for the club’s boxers to perform locally and showcase the talent being developed in Salisbury’s boxing community.

Mahony’s next aim is to continue progressing, gain experience and build on his performance in Guernsey.

His win came while boxing for a representative Western Counties side, adding to the significance of the result for the young fighter.
