Celtic Injury Scare as O’Neill Reveals Why Two-Goal Osmand Was Taken Off
Celtic Injury Scare as O’Neill Reveals Why Two-Goal Osmand Was Taken Off

Martin O’Neill explains the precautionary decision to withdraw Celtic’s two-goal hero after a first-half hamstring concern.

Celtic supporters were celebrating a magnificent 7-1 demolition of Hearts this afternoon, but one worrying development threatened to take some of the shine off an otherwise extraordinary performance.

Callum Osmand, handed his first Celtic start by Martin O’Neill, scored twice before being withdrawn at half-time.

Naturally, the sight of the youngster failing to emerge for the second half immediately raised concerns.

O’Neill Explains Osmand’s Injury Scare

Speaking after the match, O’Neill revealed that Osmand had experienced discomfort in his hamstring, prompting the decision to replace him with Jota.

Crucially, the Celtic manager indicated that the substitution was precautionary and expressed optimism that the youngster could recover in time for Thursday’s Europa League encounter with Celta Vigo.

That is encouraging news, although Celtic will undoubtedly want to assess the situation carefully before risking him again.

After all, this is a player whose recent injury history makes even a relatively minor hamstring complaint worthy of attention.

From Frustration to Two-Goal Hero

What makes this development particularly frustrating is the timing.

Only yesterday, Osmand spoke candidly about the difficulties of spending so much time on the sidelines since arriving from Fulham.

The youngster made it clear that nobody was more frustrated by his injury problems than himself.

Then came today’s extraordinary response.

Two excellent first-half goals against Hearts demonstrated precisely why O’Neill has such an exciting attacking prospect at his disposal.

His movement, composure and willingness to attack dangerous areas gave Celtic another dimension.

Celtic Must Protect Their Young Striker

There is an important distinction between being disappointed about another injury concern and assuming the worst.

O’Neill’s initial assessment offers genuine encouragement. Nevertheless, Celtic must resist any temptation to rush Osmand back simply because Thursday’s European fixture carries enormous importance.

The youngster has already experienced enough setbacks.

For me, his performance against Hearts was a reminder of what Celtic have been missing, rather than simply another impressive afternoon from an emerging talent.

Two goals, a standing ovation and renewed optimism.

The hope now is that this precautionary withdrawal proves exactly that — precautionary.

Celtic cannot afford to lose Osmand’s momentum just as his career finally appears ready to accelerate.
