Cameron Young has revealed that he was left stunned when Scottie Scheffler hit a tee shot out of bounds at the Tour Championship, but also shared what he found so impressive about how the world number one responded.

Scheffler is the best player in the game right now. He has won four major championship titles, while he is a US Open victory away from becoming the seventh male to complete the Career Grand Slam.

The 30-year-old is well known for his relentless consistency. Scheffler’s style is often compared to Jack Nicklaus because he so rarely makes a mistake.

It is so rare, in fact, that Cameron Young is in no doubt over the worst shot he has ever seen Scottie Scheffler hit.

Cameron Young explains how Scottie Scheffler stunned him at the Tour Championship

Speaking to 5 Clubs about how he appreciates Scheffler’s approach to the game more than any other player, Young explained how he was taken aback by the way his countryman once reacted to making a huge error at the Tour Championship.

“He talks about it all the time, and you can see it in the cadence of how he does things, the freedom that he executes with, it’s admirable the way that he’s done that. To me, it looks like he just pushes the button and goes. He clicks a button and he’ll go through the same process and he executes the shot and he moves on,” he said.

“I’ll never forget, I think it was last year at East Lake, we were playing together on Sunday maybe, and he hit the worst shot I’ve ever seen him hit. I think he hit it out of bounds left off the first tee. And I was in shock, but he didn’t react, teed up a ball, hit it in the fairway, hit seven iron to like two feet, tapped in for bogey, and I think was one under through four. I had striped it off the first tee and was one over through four. I think that was a striking example of he just started over, hit another shot and moved on, and hit another good shot after that. You never would have known what happened.”

Cameron Young lauds Chris Gotterup after their impressive Presidents Cup performances

Young has found another gear over the last 15 months. He secured his first PGA Tour victory at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, and won both The Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship since then.

He was also Team USA’s best player at last September’s Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup last month.

Another breakout star at Medinah was Chris Gotterup. Young and Gotterup formed an outstanding partnership on Saturday in Illinois, winning both of their matches on the penultimate day of the event.

And Young explained why he seemed to click so well with Gotterup.

“It worked really well. Chris is a great guy, obviously a tremendously talented player. I think the style of golf that we like to play helps in that scenario when you’re playing with a partner for a team, there’s an element of not wanting to let people down for sure. And with Chris it was really easy because for both of us I think, when in doubt, tee it up, hit it hard, and go find it. That level of freedom in that circumstance where things do feel a little tight, a little heightened, makes it a lot easier, just knowing that if I hit it somewhere wild, he’s probably been there before too, and the same for him. It just worked out well,” he said.

“When he started going, he’s an easy guy to be happy for. When he makes a 50-footer on the 14th hole in our first match on that Saturday morning, that’s one I won’t forget. It was really cool to watch, and I was really excited for him to go nuts in a situation like that. He made three putts basically in a row, on 14, 15, and 17. It was pretty cool to watch.”

Team USA clearly have a lot of work to do if they hope to win the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in 2027. However, the partnership Young and Gotterup formed is one reason for real optimism.

They should be a duo that Jim Furyk shows tremendous faith in next September.
