Chelsea lose 2-0 to Tottenham as Palmer is sent off

But if you tried to conjure up the most painful result for home fans to suffer, it would be Chelsea 0 Tottenham 2 at Stamford Bridge, writes Tim Harrison.

Chelsea had won more games in all competitions against Tottenham – 83 in all – than against any other club, and went into Saturday’s game (October 24) having lost only one of their previous 16 home London derbies. But caught between the combined efforts of lashing storms and a resurgent Spurs side, the Blues fell well short of continuing that dominance.

With Emi Martínez still nursing the jaw he broke at Everton, Mike Penders was between the sticks; the 21-year-old being Chelsea’s youngest Premier League keeper. His confidence will have taken a big knock as it was his misfist which gifted Spurs their opener.

Then Cole Palmer, who had been hoping to score his 50th league goal for Chelsea, was instead red-carded by ref Chris Kavanagh.

Without João Pedro up front, Palmer and Morgan Rogers failed to pose any real threat, and Spurs gleefully capitalised.

Mathys Tel capped off the north Londoners’ display by making it 2-0 in the 87th minute.

Before the match, Xabi Alonso had praised his team’s emotional control, but Alonso has to take his share of the blame for tactical failings.

After Penders’ own goal, Palmer – already booked – was sent off for a lunge on Conor Gallagher. Frustratingly, Chelsea might yet have found an equaliser before the No 10 left the field.

Danny Welbeck came on, but too late to affect the result for the Blues, and Spurs were able to notch up only their second win in 35 attempts in this fixture.

After midweek cup action against Liverpool, Chelsea next face Man U at the Bridge.
