On a roll.
A week can be a long time in football as the Hatters have just proven.
Not long ago the rumblings were growing, by the day, that Jack Wilshere might not be the man for the job and that the support were feeling aggrieved about recent results.
However, three wins on the bounce, at Kenilworth Road, against Barnsley, Leicester City and Doncaster Rovers, have lifted Luton Town to the fringes of the promotion race.
Last night I probably was not the only Hatter fearful that, after the previous two games, we might run out of steam with Doncaster Rovers proving to be our banana skin, especially after they had won their last game, a derby against Sheffield Wednesday.
But as reported by – The Lutonian – Jack Wilshere, clearly aware of what was needed when playing a third game in quick time, roused his squad, remarking after the game:
“We had to get hold of that and find our way in the game, which can happen, after a big performance on Saturday and the game ends in the way it did, which takes a lot of emotional energy and then the players have to go again.”
“We need players that can do that because that is the demands at this level, but it’s not easy. I know that from my experience as a player, it’s not always easy to go in that third game.”
It isn’t but, apart from an early scare when a Doncaster Rovers header, that should have ended up in the net, didn’t and surviving a nervy finish, ensured the victory was ours.
Continuing, Jack added:
“I’m happy for the players and proud of them for that because we found a way in the first half. I thought we deserved our lead at half-time.”
“And then that was a message at half-time because if we go to the next level, we can take this game away from them because we also knew that it was their third game in a week. Credit to the players because that took a lot.”
I’ll readily admit I was thankful for the penalty, I thought it was a little harsh, but the manner in which Luton Town kicked on in the second half was impressive and augers well for the rest of the season.
But as we are all aware, we need, if promotion is our aim, to keep this momentum going and not slip up, on Saturday, against Peterborough, and next Tuesday evening away to Huddersfield Town, both tough games.
