Ibrox Noise today is focusing a little on Rangers star Dujon Sterling, and the material from his press conference. Speaking very well indeed, Rangers’ stalwart RB discussed various aspects of life at Rangers, and delivered a refreshingly direct approach.
The fact he was even bleeped out for saying ‘shit’ at one point showed just how direct the boy is. He previously said the same before about how bad Rangers were in the past. Philippe Clement heavily condemned him for it back then.
However one of the biggest key takeaways from this presser was something Danny Rohl fans won’t want to hear. It also confirms how bad Russell Martin was as well.
Speaking on Rangers last season Ibrox star Dujon Sterling said:
“Last year we played quite a lot off the cuff. We were waiting for something to happen. If it happened, it happened. If it didn’t, then it was like, ‘Oh well.'”
This is damningly indicting of both Martin and Rohl. A highly respected player like Sterling basically admitting the tactics from those managers were non-existent, and the players were waiting for things to happen instead.
The system itself is supposed to have players working hard, making openings, freeing space up for runners, moving around and creating.
By what Sterling said, both Rohl and Martin’s systems didn’t allow for that, that they were tactically inept and the players just weren’t playing for either boss.
This isn’t even Sterling praising Derek McInnes. Because he actually doesn’t. This isn’t a player being positive about the ‘current manager’ and slagging off predecessors. Because he doesn’t really offer McInnes huge praise either.
All he does is say that now, at last, they have a system that works for them, and without him saying it, obviously it’s McInnes behind that.
In sharp contrast to the slop that both Martin and Rohl had them doing last season. None of that was working even if some supporters had very high hopes at the time. Didn’t quite pan out.
Quite the contrast.
