Tottenham Hotspur registered their first Premier League win of the 2026/27 season as they defeated Coventry City 3-1 on Monday night.
The night belonged to the returning James Maddison, who was making his first start for the club in 18 months following a serious knee injury, as the creative midfielder netted a fantastic opener into the top corner after just 14 minutes.
Jack Rudoni equalised for the visitors in the second half, before Omar Marmoush got his first goal for the club, and substitute Ben Davies sealed the deal in the 95th minute and helped the Lilywhites move away from the drop zone.
After the full-time whistle blew, a wave of relief rippled round the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Lilywhites looked a more confident, more clinical and dangerous team, with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski back fit.
The creative midfielders were a part of a rare home win, just Tottenham’s sixth in the past 37 league games. The key now will be keeping the duo fit and fresh, as they are clearly capable of winning games for Tottenham.
Roberto De Zerbi gave his verdict on Tottenham’s win over Coventry City. The Spurs boss praised his team’s attitude and spirit, whilst urging them to push and improve further in every department. He also lauded the fans for their excellent support throughout the game.
“I am delighted for the result, the attitude, the spirit and the reaction after the goal we conceded. Honestly, we did not play so well like the last games. But now, for our responsibility, they deserve credit as they defended very well and compact,” De Zerbi said in an interview with BBC Sport.
“Now we have to understand we are able to win because after two or three seasons like this, the mental aspect is crucial. We have to thank the fans, especially in the last part of the game; they were fantastic. They have suffered a lot. We have to push, we have to improve the quality of the play for sure, but we are a good team, a very good team.”
The smell of victory was in the air since last week, especially after such a good performance in the 1-1 away draw with Manchester United. Spurs did well to clinch a point with 10 men at Old Trafford, and De Zerbi asked his boys to raise their levels against Coventry City. And the team certainly did not disappoint their gaffer, producing a strong display to comprehensively beat Coventry 3-1.
Having now got a first league win, De Zerbi will hope to see mental pressure eased on his side as they look to climb up the Premier League table. Tottenham’s next assignment is a small matter of a London derby with Chelsea at the weekend, and our boys will have to play out of their skins to get a result at Stamford Bridge.
