Alcester Town showed their battling qualities on Wednesday evening as they held Redditch Borough to a goalless draw despite playing with 10 men for 65 minutes.
Aaron Blackwood’s side looked to build on Saturday's impressive 4-0 victory over Shortwood United, but their task became considerably more difficult when Henry Gibson was sent off in the 25th minute.
Forced to adjust their game plan, Alcester responded with a determined defensive display, frustrating Redditch for much of the second half. Tom Walker proved crucial between the posts, saving and holding a second-half penalty before Cameron Crook came close to snatching a late winner at the other end.
With both sides unable to find a breakthrough, the Romans left Redditch with a valuable point after a performance full of commitment, resilience and determination.
Alcester started positively and created opportunities to take the lead. Captain Jake Wicketts caused problems with his long throw-ins, and one delivery saw the ball headed back out towards him.
Wicketts beat his man before unleashing an effort from outside the penalty area, but the Redditch goalkeeper was equal to it.
Adam Taylor then helped create another promising opportunity for the visitors. A ball over the top found Taylor, who laid it back into Wicketts' path.
The captain's shot was blocked, with the rebound falling to Louis Crook, whose follow-up effort was also blocked in what proved to be one of Alcester's best chances of the evening.
However, the game took a dramatic turn in the 30th minute when Gibson was shown a red card following a passage of play involving loose possession and a 50-50 challenge. The decision came as a surprise to those watching and left the Romans facing the challenge of playing the remaining 60 minutes with 10 men.
Crook was cautioned just two minutes later as Alcester adjusted to their reduced numbers. Redditch's Louis O'Sullivan also received a yellow card in first-half stoppage time.
Despite the setback, the Romans remained organised and determined, keeping the hosts at bay to reach half-time with the scores level.
Alcester returned for the second half knowing that discipline and organisation would be vital if they were to take something from the game.
With a numerical disadvantage, the Romans stayed compact and frustrated their opponents for much of the half. Redditch looked to exploit the extra space by delivering dangerous balls into the penalty area, but Alcester's defence and goalkeeper Walker dealt well with the pressure.
The hosts appeared to have broken the deadlock at one stage, only for their effort to be ruled out for offside, allowing The Romans to regroup and continue their defensive effort.
Another major talking point followed when Zak James was bundled over inside the Alcester penalty area and landed on the ball. The referee awarded Redditch a penalty for handball, a decision that left the visitors questioning the call.
With the game threatening to turn against them, Walker delivered a crucial moment for the Romans. The Redditch substitute stepped up to take the spot-kick, but the Alcester goalkeeper produced an excellent save and held onto the ball to preserve the 0–0 scoreline.
It was a vital intervention that underlined Walker's importance to the side and kept Alcester firmly in the contest.
Despite spending much of the second half defending, the Romans continued to look for an opportunity of their own. Late in the game, a superb ball into the box found Cameron Crook, whose header flew narrowly over the crossbar as Alcester came agonisingly close to snatching all three points.
The visitors continued to battle through the closing stages, with substitutions helping to see out the game. George Davis replaced Louis Crook in the 70th minute, followed by Dale Edwards for Adam Taylor in the 74th. Adam Garmson then came on for captain Wicketts in the 83rd minute.
Redditch also made several changes as they searched for a late winner, but the Romans stood firm until the final whistle.
After playing with 10 men for 65 minutes, Alcester had secured a hard-earned point on the road, moving them six points clear at the top of Hellenic League Division One.
