Bayern Munich has been without Vincent Kompany since his alarming collapse at the club's training ground, and the Bundesliga leaders are taking no chances with his recovery.
The 40-year-old is back home after a spell in hospital, but the club have now made clear that this is a complete rest period away from the sport, ensuring that he can recover properly.
The measures put in place have struck a chord with fans – and say plenty about how hard the Belgian drives himself.
Kompany collapsed while watching a Bayern second-team session and was taken to hospital on October 23. He had already missed media duties earlier that week with a viral infection, but this incident was extremely concerning for all involved.
Max Eberl later confirmed the cause to German broadcaster ARD, explaining that Kompany had suffered meningeal irritation following the virus. The director of sport said the head coach would now rest and take medication, and expressed confidence he would return to the touchline at full strength.
Further details had emerged in the days after his collapse, and the club's response since has been unequivocal.
Interim boss Aaron Danks revealed that he and the coaching staff are under strict orders not to discuss tactics, analysis or team selection with Kompany at all, ensuring Kompany is rested in his mind, as well as his body.
"We don't talk to him about football. We've been given clear instructions there," Danks said, with the directive coming from Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund.
According to Bild, that extends to phone calls and visits – even if Kompany raises football himself, his staff are not to engage. The outlet also reported that doctors told Kompany to prioritise a full recovery after he failed to give the initial virus enough attention, with late nights spent on video analysis cited as a factor.
Danks added that the priority is for Kompany to rest and spend time with his family, so he returns fully fit. Kompany is not the first elite manager forced to step away – Antonio Conte famously returned too soon after gallbladder surgery at Tottenham before being sent back to Italy to recover fully.
He later stated how he raced back too quickly, underestimating the recovery process. "For sure I under-evaluated the recovery after surgery. For this reason I think that for my sense of responsibility I wanted to come back early," the Italian said in 2023.

The story has drawn a strong response online. On Reddit, the overwhelming reaction was praise for Bayern's bosses for effectively forcing Kompany to step away, with one widely upvoted comment joking it was the first time they had seen someone told not to do the job they are paid for.
Others felt it underlined the intensity Kompany brings to the role, with many labelling him a workaholic and suggesting the club were saving him from himself.
In his absence, Danks has kept Bayern on course, overseeing a 3-1 win at Freiburg and a 6-1 DFB-Pokal thrashing of Magdeburg. Next up is Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund, with the two sides level on points at the top of the Bundesliga.
After that, it's two games in five days as they travel to face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, before heading to Mainz just days later, as they aim to maintain the good start Kompany has overseen this season.
