DECLAN Cassidy may no longer be lining out for Derrygonnelly seniors, but his contribution to the Harps’ proud history remains firmly etched in the club’s story.
In 2016, he was among those who helped the Harps overcome Erne Gaels to claim the Fermanagh senior title, a victory that brought immense pride and joy to the club and its supporters.
For a club where championship success means so much, this was more than just another county title.
It was a reward for years of commitment, sacrifice and hard work, and a moment for players, supporters and the wider Derrygonnelly community to savour.
Victory to remember
The Harps had been beaten twice by Erne Gaels earlier that year, making their 0-11 to 1-7 victory all the more satisfying for the Derrygonnelly faithful.
They knew they would have to dig deep against a talented Belleek side, but when the pressure mounted, Derrygonnelly found a way.
Cassidy had produced many fine moments in the Harps jersey and his experience was important on a day when composure and character mattered just as much as footballing ability.
Derrygonnelly’s strength has long been built on the collective spirit of the team, with players willing to put their bodies on the line for one another.
That determination was evident throughout the final as the Harps held firm against Erne Gaels’ challenge.
Goalkeeper Dermot Feely also made a decisive contribution, producing a superb late save to deny Seamie Ryder a goal-bound effort, as he signed off after a hugely successful career for the club.
The victory secured back-to-back senior titles for Derrygonnelly and laid the foundations for a historic five-in-a-row, cementing the Harps’ place in Fermanagh football history.
