Manchester United have shared a fierce rivalry with Liverpool for decades, but one former Anfield figure has now joined the Red Devils.

Manchester United officially appoint former Liverpool specialist

Manchester United and Liverpool have spent generations fighting for supremacy, with their historic rivalry remaining one of football’s fiercest.

Separated by just 35 miles, the two English giants have built their identities around success, pride and a refusal to surrender bragging rights.

From Sir Alex Ferguson’s determination to knock Liverpool off their perch to the unforgettable battles between their greatest players, the rivalry has produced countless defining moments.

United enjoyed another memorable chapter in May 2026, defeating Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford to secure Champions League qualification.

Michael Carrick’s side surrendered a two-goal advantage before Kobbie Mainoo struck the winner, sending Old Trafford into celebration.

For Liverpool, it was another painful defeat against their greatest rivals, while United strengthened their grip on third place.

Despite the hostility between supporters, the professional relationship between Manchester United and Liverpool extends beyond their first teams.

Both clubs invest heavily in developing young footballers, with specialist staff playing important roles in supporting players throughout their academy journeys.

Interestingly, Manchester United have now strengthened their academy structure with an appointment involving someone who previously worked within Liverpool’s women’s youth setup.

Mia Reynolds has confirmed her appointment as Girls Academy Wellbeing Officer at Manchester United, having previously completed a sport psychology placement at Liverpool Women’s Academy.

Announcing the appointment on LinkedIn, Reynolds wrote: “I’m happy to share that I’ve started a new position as Girls Academy Wellbeing Officer at Manchester United!”

She explained that her new responsibilities involve developing wellbeing provision and supporting the psychological welfare of players within United’s girls’ academy.

Reynolds began her new position in September 2026, according to her LinkedIn employment history.

Her previous Liverpool experience dates back to November 2022, when she began a four-month placement working alongside sport psychologists.

During her time at Liverpool, Reynolds helped design and deliver psychological workshops for young players and their parents, including an educational programme supporting Under-12 footballers.

She subsequently gained experience at Fleetwood Town and Liverpool Feds, while also undertaking a Manchester United academy alumni research project beginning in March 2024.

The appointment brings further specialist experience to United’s academy wellbeing department.
