Australia strengthened their position in the series-deciding third Test against South Africa at Cape Town, but Marco Jansen produced a moment of brilliance to give the hosts a much-needed breakthrough on Day 2. The left-arm pacer ended Cameron Green’s impressive innings with a delivery that found the outside edge, showcasing his ability to trouble even well-set batters.

The dismissal came at a crucial stage of Australia’s first innings, with Green and Matt Renshaw having already put together a substantial partnership. Despite Jansen’s timely intervention, Australia ended the day in a commanding position at 330/4, taking a narrow first-innings lead after bowling South Africa out for 329.

Marco Jansen produces a beauty to dismiss Cameron Green

Jansen delivered a length ball from over the wicket, angling it away from Green in the channel outside the off stump. The Australian all-rounder attempted to play at the delivery but could not get his bat behind it properly, producing a thick outside edge.

The ball travelled towards second slip, where Simon Harmer was positioned unusually close to the batter. The catch arrived around knee height, and Harmer managed to hold on despite appearing surprised by how quickly the ball reached him.

Green departed after scoring a valuable 65, bringing an end to a crucial partnership that had helped Australia recover from a difficult phase. The dismissal also highlighted Jansen’s effectiveness with the new ball and his ability to generate movement off the pitch.

The wicket was particularly significant for Jansen, as he reached the milestone of 100 Test wickets during his impressive spell. He also removed Renshaw before the tea interval, giving South Africa a chance to regain momentum.

Here’s the video:

Matt Renshaw and Cameron Green rebuild Australia’s innings

Australia entered their innings looking to establish an advantage after conceding 329 in the first innings. Playing without injured captain Steve Smith, the visitors relied on a reshuffled batting order to navigate a challenging period.

Renshaw, returning to the top of the order, provided a positive start alongside Travis Head. Their opening partnership yielded 58 runs before Harmer intervened, dismissing Head for 41 and then sending Marnus Labuschagne back to the pavilion for a five-ball duck.

With Australia suddenly under pressure, Renshaw and Green steadied the innings through a determined 126-run partnership for the third wicket. Renshaw contributed 74, while Green’s 65 ensured the visitors remained firmly in contention. Jansen’s double breakthrough before tea briefly shifted the momentum towards South Africa, but the hosts could not build on those wickets.

Josh Inglis and Alex Carey put Australia in control

Australia finished the day strongly, thanks to an unbeaten partnership between Josh Inglis and Alex Carey. Inglis remained unbeaten on 85, while Carey reached 51 not out as the pair added 145 runs without being separated. Their resilience frustrated the South African bowlers during the final session and pushed Australia to 330/4 at stumps. The visitors held a one-run lead, with six wickets still available to extend their advantage.

With the three-match series level at 1-1, the Cape Town Test remains crucial for both sides. Beyond securing the series, Australia and South Africa are also competing for the top position in the world Test rankings. Jansen’s dismissal of Green offered South Africa a valuable breakthrough, but the hosts will need an early strike on Day 3 to prevent Australia from building a decisive first-innings lead.
