The return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the India National Cricket Team could have been a lot better if he had taken a wicket against the New Zealand National Cricket Team in the first T20I of the series in Christchurch. Instead of taking any wicket, the experienced pacer leaked too many runs and a no-ball in his spell and returned with 0/49 from four overs.
It was a rare occasion in the match when the umpire signalled for a no-ball on a Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery. After that, they started to concede runs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was backed by a couple of tremendous Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), joined the national side after almost four years, with a lot of expectations and hype. The first match of the series against New Zealand remained far from his best.
Former Team India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin mentioned in his YouTube video that conceding the no-ball might have broken Kumar's rhythm. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is not among the bowlers who give away extra runs through no-balls. So when the umpire raised his arm to signal a no-ball, that could have dented the confidence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Ravichandran Ashwin, in the same video, mentioned that people judged someone too early. Kumar played the match for India after a long gap. Spectators need to keep their patience to offer the bowler some time to cope with the conditions.
"It was not as good as it could have been. But I don't think his bowling was really bad. He was on the money in the first eight to nine balls. I think it changed after that no-ball. That changed the momentum. But maybe expectations are more on him. It is too early to judge. There was a lot of dew as well. People are very quick to judge. We need to be a bit patient and give him some time," Ravichandran Ashwin said on 'Ash ki Baat'.
For the last few T20I matches, including the recently played T20I match against New Zealand, the Indian team management trusted Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma to open the innings, keeping Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the bench. Ashwin sensed that there were some cricket fans who were not happy to see Vaibhav not in the playing eleven again.
For those who are expecting to see Vaibhav Sooryavanshi playing every T20 International matches for India, Ravichandran Ashwin suggested them to enjoy the battings of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma.
"Vaibhav is not getting to play, and people are frustrated. I know he is an exceptional talent. But the way Abhishek and Samson are batting, we have to value them. Vaibhav's time will come. But till these guys are playing, we need to enjoy it. Just see how they are batting. We have to appreciate them," he said.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi is likely to play in the next match against New Zealand, in place of injured Ishan Kishan.
