Man City player ratings vs AEK Athens with two 8/10s and Phil Foden sensational

Manchester City player ratings from the 5-1 win over AEK Athens in the Champions League

Phil Foden and Rico Lewis

Phil Foden and Rico Lewis

Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City smashed AEK Athens 5-1 in the Champions League. The Etihad was barely more than half full but those who came were treated to an entertaining night with homegrown players front and centre of the win.

Floyd Samba, deputising for Erling Haaland as he had done last month in the Carabao Cup, won the free-kick that got City on their way and Rico Lewis combined with Foden for the second goal. AEK got one back early in the second half but Rayan Cherki restored the two-goal lead before Foden took over.

After smashing in a second from a lovely touch back from Lewis, he completed his hat-trick by tapping in substitute Ryan McAidoo's cross to make City's win even more dominant. Haaland was not involved but was on the bench, raising hopes that he will be fine to face Aston Villa on Saturday.

Here are the player ratings from the Manchester Evening News.

Donnarumma: Put his team under pressure with some risky passes at the back, 6

Lewis: Not great for the AEK goal but more than made up for it going forwards, combining particularly well with Foden. 8

Khusanov: Some tidy play to clean things up at the back for City and a few crunching tackles. 7

Dias: A quiet night, although he added to a sticky few minutes in the second half when he ran the ball out of play. 6

Gvardiol: Some decent play going forward and walked off a nasty knock shortly before he was substituted. 7

Anderson: Kept things calm with his foot on the ball, making short passes that kept City ticking. 7

Fernandez: His free-kick made the opening goal and he made some intelligent runs all game. 7

Cherki: Showboating from the off and picked out Lewis with a terrific ball for Foden's second shortly after his well-taken goal. 8

Foden: Started the game well and grew in confidence, with the second of his three particularly brilliant. 9

Allan: An enigma, with trickery that seemed to surprise even his own feet as he finds his in English football. 7

Samba: Drove at the defence with purpose before the first goal and did well on another big night for him. 7
