Civil war breaks out with Jets as star Garrett Wilson erupts at QB Geno Smith during loss to Dolphins

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson appeared to erupt at quarterback Geno Smith and some coaches during Sunday's frustrating loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The 26-year-old former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year downplayed the confrontation later with reporters, insisting he wasn't yelling at his quarterback.

'We were collaborating,' Wilson said after the loss. 'I don't even think I was talking to Geno. I think we were both heated but not at each other at all. We were just disappointed with how we were playing up until that point, wanted to be a little more aggressive.'

Similarly, Smith didn't recall being yelled at by Wilson.

'I don't remember that,' Smith said. 'He might have been yelling, but I don't think he was yelling at me.'

Jets pass game coordinator Seth Ryan, the son of former head coach Rex Ryan, was on hand for the confrontation but it's unclear if Wilson's frustration was directed at him.

What is clear is that Wilson was, indeed, annoyed.

The former Ohio State star was targeted just three times on Sunday as he recorded two catches.

Meanwhile, rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr and second-year tight end Mason Taylor combined for 10 catches, 177 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith wasn't bad, completing 23 of 30 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns. And while he did toss an interception, the Dolphins failed to capitalize on the turnover. Truthfully, Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich's unit wasn't terrible, gaining 108 yards on the ground on just 21 carries.

The problem, as Jets fans are all too aware, was on defense, where head coach Aaron Glenn and coordinator Brian Duker failed to come up with any answers on Sunday. Miami gained 156 yards on the ground, won the possession battle by 10 minutes, and even allowed up-and-down quarterback Malik Willis to toss for two scores.

Miami was a perfect 3 for 3 on fourth down, which helped to seal the Dolphins' first victory of the season. But the worst moment may have come at the end of the first half, when New York allowed Willis to scramble in for a touchdown with six seconds left in the second quarter. Glenn had timeouts but effectively denied his team a final possession in the first half by not using them.

'It's just a matter of when, not if, they fire the coach,' ESPN host and long-time Jets fan Mike Greenberg wrote on X. 'They absolutely should.'
