Assistant manager Danny Webb has said Chesterfield need to "marry up" performances and results, starting when they host third-placed Crewe in League Two on Saturday.
The Spireites are ninth after 12 games, one point outside the top seven.
Chesterfield have taken two points from their past three matches, all against teams currently in the bottom six.
Webb told BBC Radio Sheffield: "The performances have been decent, the results haven't, so we need to marry those two up on Saturday.
"A team is a team and how it's built. If people want to criticise a team, that's absolutely fine - football is about opinions.
"Recently, we should have scored more and we've conceded some poor goals. Put those two things hand in hand and you don't win many three points."
Chesterfield let leads slip in draws with Crawley and Colchester, while also losing 1-0 at Port Vale.
"At the start of the season we were saying 'the team's gelling' and if you keep saying it, it does wears thin because you're quite a few games into the season," added Webb.
"There have been real glimpses of good play, and when it's that final execution of the ball, sadly it's just been missing over the past few weeks.
"Like anything - form, missed chances or poor goals conceded - those things can stop or start at any time. We're hoping we can keep a nice clean sheet and score some goals on Saturday."
