Tyrese Maxey hits 2 late 3s as 76ers beat Pacers 114-109

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tyrese Maxey scored 27 points, including two 3-pointers in the final 1 1/2 minutes, to lift the Philadelphia 76ers to a 114-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

Joel Embiid had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the 76ers, who rebounded from a dismal start to the second half. Jaylen Brown had 20 points and 10 boards, Anfernee Simons scored 20 points off the bench and LeBron James added 13 points and 10 assists.

Maxey’s second 3-pointer gave the 76ers a 112-106 lead with 46 seconds left.

Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton was sidelined with a left hamstring strain. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said he expected Haliburton will be out at least two weeks.

Andrew Nembhard returned after missing Monday’s loss at Milwaukee with neck soreness and finished with 18 points and 14 assists. Pascal Siakam, who fouled out with 12 seconds left, led the Pacers with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Aaron Nesmith added 18 points.

Pacers center Ivica Zubac also missed his second consecutive game with a left ankle sprain

VJ Edgecombe’s halfcourt shot at the buzzer gave Philadelphia a 62-52 halftime lead. Indiana, which shot 39% in the first half, scored the first 17 points of the third quarter to take a 69-62 lead.

Indiana boosted its lead to 88-75 after three quarters. The Sixers were 5 of 21 from the field in the quarter while the Pacers sank 13 of 23 shots.

However, Philadelphia got hot to start the fourth quarter. The 76ers tied the game at 94-all on Maxey’s layup and regained the lead on Maxey’s two free throws with 96-94 with 5:15 remaining.

CAVALIERS 121, WIZARDS 111

CLEVELAND (AP) — Evan Mobley had 24 points, Peyton Watson added 22 and Cleveland rallied in the second half for a victory over Washington, spoiling AJ Dybantsa’s NBA debut.

Dybantsa, the No. 1 pick in the June draft, led the Wizards with 19 points. He started at shooting guard and played 26 minutes. Dybantsa was sidelined the first four games due to a sprained ankle.

He scored nine points in the first quarter. According to Sportradar, that was the most first quarter points by a Wizards rookie making their debut since at least 1996-97.

Donovan Mitchell added 19 points for the Cavaliers, who have won three straight after squandering a 29-point lead and dropping their opener at Philadelphia.

Washington’s Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr scored 18 apiece and Bilal Coulibaly added 17 points as he made his first eight shots. Kyshawn George had 11 assists.

Mobley made a career-high five 3-pointers and had 10 points in the fourth quarter. Watson, who was acquired from Denver during the offseason, also had six rebounds in 28 minutes.

HEAT 129, HAWKS 117

ATLANTA (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 24 points and 18 rebounds in his first victory with the Heat, leading Miami over Atlanta.

Bam Adebayo also had 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Heat, who lost their first four games after acquiring Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee in the offseason. Adebayo passed Udonis Haslem to become the Heat’s career leader in rebounds.

Andrew Wiggins scored 18 points and Pelle Larsson had 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds for the Heat, who shot 53% from the field and had a whopping 70 points in the paint.

Rookie Kingston Flemings and Nickeil Alexander-Walker each scored 23 points for the Hawks, who have dropped three in a row after opening the season with consecutive wins. Jalen Johnson shot just 4 for 12 and finished with 12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

The Hawks were playing the first game of a home back-to-back. The start of their game against Cleveland on Thursday was pushed back an hour so that Game 6 of the WNBA Finals between Atlanta and Golden State could be played at State Farm Arena during the afternoon.

PISTONS 97, HORNETS 89

DETROIT (AP) — Cade Cunningham scored 30 points to help Detroit hold off Charlotte.

Paul Reed added 16 points and Ausar Thompson had seven points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Pistons (4-1). They were coming off a 111-97 loss at New York on Tuesday night.

Brandon Miller had 31 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte, but missed five of his seven shots in the fourth quarter. Dennis Schroeder scored 14 points, but no other Hornets reached double figures.

Charlotte turned the ball over 25 times to Detroit’s 14.

Miller had 21 points as the Hornets built a 51-44 halftime lead. Neither team could consistently hit shots, but Charlotte’s 6-0 advantage in second-chance points was enough to keep it ahead.

Detroit, though, started the third quarter with a 16-5 run that included 3-pointers from four players. The Pistons also forced eight turnovers in the quarter on their way to a 76-70 lead.

Charlotte stayed close for most of the fourth, but Miller’s shooting struggles and five more turnovers kept it from making a serious challenge.

RAPTORS 129, MAGIC 99

TORONTO (AP) — Scottie Barnes scored 28 points, RJ Barrett had 25 and Toronto routed Orlando to open a two-game set.

The teams will meet again Friday night at Scotiabank Arena in an NBA Cup game.

Toronto star Kawhi Leonard sat out as he recovers from swelling in his left knee. He was not on the Raptors’ bench.

Barnes added six rebounds and four assists to help Toronto improve to 3-1. Barrett also had nine rebounds and six assists.

Ja’Kobe Walter had 14 points and five rebounds starting in place of Leonard.

Backup point guard Jamal Shead provided a spark for Toronto, scoring 13 points and adding seven assists.

Reserve forward Tristan da Silva had 20 points to lead Orlando (1-3). Franz Wagner had 15 points, five assists and four rebounds.

NUGGETS 104, PELICANS 91

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Nikola Jokic had 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his 200th career triple-double in the regular season, and Denver never trailed in a victory over winless New Orleans.

Jamal Murray scored 23 points, and Aaron Gordon added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who swept a two-game, home-and-home series with New Orleans.

After overcoming a 23-point deficit on to beat the Pelicans in Denver on Saturday, the Nuggets this time raced to a 22-point lead in the first half and maintained a comfortable margin most of the way.

Zion Williamson scored 25 points for the Pelicans, hitting a fourth-quarter 3 that pulled New Orleans as close as 88-83. Murray responded with a 3 and a driving finger roll to push the Nuggets’ lead back to 10.

Jokic needs 10 more regular season triple-doubles to supplant Russell Westbrook, who retired after last season, as the NBA leader.

Christian Braun scored 15 points and Trevon Brazile added 11 points for Denver, which entered the game with several injuries and used just nine players.

Derik Queen had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Jeremiah Fears scored 11 points for the Pelicans, who are 0-4 under first-year coach Jamahl Mosley.

ROCKETS 132, BUCKS 100

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Fred VanVleet scored 24 points and Amen Thompson added 23 as Houston remained undefeated with a rout of Milwaukee.

Center Alperen Sengun, the leading scorer for Houston (5-0) at 24.5 points per game, sat out with low back soreness.

VanVleet, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, hit 7 of 14 shots, including 4 of 9 from deep. He scored 15 consecutive points for Houston midway through the third quarter, hitting three free throws to put the Rockets up 81-61.

Thompson hit 10 of 16 shots as the Rockets shot 54.8%. Kevin Durant added 18 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic had 16 points in 15 minutes. Houston made 23 of 26 free-throw attempts.

Tyler Herro scored 23 points and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 19 for Milwaukee (1-4).

KNICKS 133, BULLS 127

CHICAGO (AP) — Jalen Brunson had 38 points and seven assists, and New York beat Chicago for its second straight win.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 19 points and 13 rebounds for New York, which beat the Detroit Pistons 111-97 on Tuesday night after dropping its first three games of the season. OG Anunoby scored 23 points, Jordan Clarkson had 18 and Landry Shamet finished with 14.

Towns and Shamet both got banged up in the first half. It looked as if Towns hurt his left wrist in a collision with Bulls forward Noa Essengue, and Shamet twisted his right ankle after a dunk. Both players went to the back before returning to the game.

Norman Powell scored 30 points for Chicago on 10-for-15 shooting. Caleb Wilson had 20 points and Matas Buzelis finished with 17, going over 2,000 points for his career.

The Bulls led by as many as 19 points in the second half of their fourth loss in five games this season.

New York grabbed control with a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter. Clarkson opened the decisive stretch with a turnaround jumper and Brunson scored to make it 124-114 with 3:45 remaining.

Chicago closed to 130-127 with 46 seconds left. Powell had a chance to tie the game on a late 3-point attempt, but he missed and Brunson and Anunoby combined for three foul shots in the final seconds for New York.

WARRIORS 119, TIMBERWOLVES 114

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Stephen Curry scored a season-high 44 points, rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had 26 and Golden State held on for a victory over Minnesota, who were without injured guard Anthony Edwards.

The Warriors have won two straight after opening 0-3, while Minnesota has dropped two in a row after starting 3-0.

Wednesday was the first test for Minnesota to see how its lineup would look without Edwards. The Timberwolves announced Tuesday that Edwards would miss extended time after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Edwards averaged 33.3 points through Minnesota’s first four games.

Curry shot 11 of 27, including six 3-pointers, and was 16 of 16 on free throws. He also had eight rebounds and six assists.

After trailing by 24, the Timberwolves climbed back in the fourth quarter thanks to Jaden McDaniels and Jonathan Kuminga. Trailing 116-112, Minnesota had multiple chances to make it a one-possession game but McDaniels missed two shots from deep in the final minute.

Kuminga led Minnesota with 20 points against his former team. Kuminga was drafted seventh overall by Golden State in 2021 and was traded to Atlanta midway through last season. He signed as a free agent with Minnesota in September.

McDaniels and Terrence Shannon Jr. each had 19 points.
